Anyone disgusted with the late Southern Zone muzzleloading season?
It's an obscenity.
Have you made your displeasure  known to your legislators in Albany and the NYSDEC?
It's long overdue that we have a primitive[sidelock, patchball, iron sight; flintlock wouldn't be out of line either ] season in August and September to reduce crop damage.

I live in the North where we have had a late muzzle season fo ryears along with an early one. I seem to do alright with both.

Just thought you might like to know that we will be having an early doe only muzzeloading season next year. One week long I think, and bow will be closed during that time. :D

Toecutter...I don't believe that is official yet.  I have no problem with the late ml season being after the shotgun season...I'd rather bow hunt anyway.  Although I have been know to pick up my ml in mid December.

disgusted with late Southern Zone m/ling season
« Reply #5 on: November 12, 2004, 02:51:36 PM »
To reiterate:

1..Crop damage[at least here in the Finger Lakes]doesn't happen in December,it happens in August,September and October.
Isn't that supposed to be a major factor regards the scheduling of the seasons?

2.Using sidelock pistols-especially flinters[starting at 54cal with roundball]is as or more range -and- WEATHER limited, than using a bow[yes I do hunt in thick cover with a flintlock pistol].

3.If the Northern Zone/Adirondacks can have an early m/ling season, then why not the Southern Zone?

4.Try hunting the typical foul weather of the Southern m/ling season with a flintlock or side caplock. How reliable are they in snow, sleet, rain??

5.How many of the hunters are under age 50 these days? How do your feet/toes/ears/fingers handle that weather?Do you have de facto age discrimination?

It's long overdue to have an early,PRIMITIVE[patched ball, iron sights, cap or flint lock] Southern Zone muzzleloading season.

Toecutter,

What can I do to help make that happen in the Southern Zone.  That would be AWESOME!

The deer are all spooked good by the time the late southern muzzleloader rolls around.  Only nice thing is you have everywhere to yourself...not even many deer around.   :)

That's pretty funny medbill :) But honestly in my experience, ML season has been one of the most productive. This is certainly because this is when we do drives almost exclusively.
It definitely is one of my favorite times, a bunch of old friends get together and really get a chance to bust each others chops and fill those doe tags we've been holding out on. By that time in the season, the self imposed pressures of connecting on that buck you've been chasing all season are either put to rest, or on the back burner till next year. Occasionally we get a glimpse or a shot at a nice buck, but it doesn't matter too much cause we're all too busy enjoying ourselves and our  company, and trying to fight off the thought that another season has passed us by.  No one really talks about it too much, but looking around at the faces and listening to the stories that are made on these few precious days (for the rest of the year!!), one gets the feeling that this is one of those perfect moments that you actually are able to realize at the time. Sorry about the ramble, but I just got the call last night from an old hunting buddy, and of course last years drives came up.
I can understand and am happy that you guys are getting an early season but I really can't get into it till the temp and the leaves begin to drop(except with the bow). As far as what I know about next season, it is a done deal(truly).  Kudos to you medbill for wanting to be proactive, but it would seem that your only job now is to use this new season to its fullest.

I heard something recently about them even offering a permit for hunting with a gun in Westchester on some of the watershed properties.  Gun hunting hasn't been done in the county in 10 years.

Toecutter, what part of the valley are you from?

Primitive=side[or under hammer] lock, preferably flint, patched ball, iron sights.I accept those limitations despite having poor eyesight and being lefthanded[lots less choices for those of us].
It's what originally got us the muzzleloading season.In-lines with sabots and scopes may-technically- be muzzleloaders, but they aren't in the
 -spirit- of that  original season.
Pimitive could also include[despite the howls of the archers]: crossbows, atlatl-atlatl, spears, etc.
I see no reason why I shouldn't use a crossbow for -nuisance- wildlife control in settled areas-it's inherently safer than a firearm.
Finally,IF we can demonstrate[in sufficient numbers] to legislators-and insurance companies[deer claims on vehicles] that we're using instruments that have both shorter range-and require more practice, perhaps we'll get an early season. Also, again ask the local farmers whether they wouldn't prefer an early season-when the crop damage is
occurring.

I guess one could say that a compound bow isnt primitive. Why not a long bow or recurve? I recurve isnt in the spirit of the primitive season either. I bet people said that when compounds became popular too.

If we hunt a late muzzleloading season and are fortunate, we would be eliminating a doe and her fawns she would have for the next years crop damage.  Not every thing we do has to be instantaneous gratification. Look down the road for the years to come. We have had it in my area for a few years of does early muzzleloading and either sex late season. We are noticing a big difference in the deer opoulation this season for sure.

Sorry for the late response Tom, I've been in the woods and away from a computer for over a week now. I'm in New Paltz, How about yourself? You been seeing much? I've been Hunting in dutchess since gun started, but down at stewart with the bow. I passed on a six with the bow and passed on a 6 or 8 (+ or - brow tines) on monday evening. I'm kinda nervous now that I jinxed myself and am destined to see only spikes for the rest of the season. I know I can't eat the horns, but I really like the looks of a nice rack on my wall.
