100 YD offhand shot.....
« on: November 11, 2004, 10:10:29 AM »
Yeah I know better.  I had just sat down to watch this field when a young buck pops out about 35yd away.  I try to move into position and he spooks.  He runs and stops a little over 100yds away with his head behind a tree and his shoulders and chest showing.  My shooting sticks were right there and I didn't grab them.  Brought her up and steadied and let it go.   I could tell the way he reacted that I hit him a little far back.  I waited about 1/2 hour and went to check for blood...sure enough there was.  Tried to track and kept losing the blood trail.  Finally I went home and got my dog Bandit to help me track the deer.  After about 1/2 hr with bandits help I found the buck.  Sure enough  about 6" to far back.  The only good thing was that I did find it and was able to harvest the animal.  I will do better in the future.

Hey, adrenalin gets the best of EVRYONE sometimes.  Whats most important, even more than finding the animal, was that you were willing to do WHATEVER it took to find the animal even though you knew it was probably a bad shot.  A lot of "idiot" hunters woulda given up the first half hour and called it a day.  Our mistakes is what makes us better hunters.  So dont feel to bad.  At least ya still got venison  :) .

Great job, I admire people that finish the job. Nothing upsets me more than someone that gives up.  :D

You didn't give up and thats whats important.  I think at one time or another all of us have taken shot that either we shouldnt have taken or at least should have taken a little more time before taking the shot .
What Caliber did you use......what configuration on your Thompson ?

I've tracked more then a couple of deer during my hunting life. Usually we'll try and track it ourselves .......but if it gets to difficult , or we lose the blood trail....we'll hightail it back to deercamp and come back with 6 or 7 hunters and find that deer.

Enjoy your Venison.....YOU EARNED IT !!!!
