got my .44 mag today hey hey!
« on: November 11, 2004, 01:38:10 PM »
got my .44 mag handi today from the shop (it finally came in ) i am allready in love with it. i was concerned when i began to put the scope base on as only two of the holes line up (it was a contender base i had around and i heard they fit). does weaver make a base  to fit the handi where all 3 holes line up? needless to say the base went back on my rossi .22 and i took the bushnell off for my .44 and stuck a red dot on it. any help or suggestions for a base or for this gun will be much appriciated.

Single shot shooter Yes weaver makes a base for H&R, no. 82 (I think)
But they only have two X-slots no adjustment for eye releif, I like NEF
base because they have 4 or 5 X-slots., Best to you Single.

I believe NEF/HR makes a scope base that fits all of the handy rifles.  Check out their web site.  www.hr1871.com    They have the mounts listed in the store section for $18.00[/url]

The best base (scope rail) around for these guns, bar none, are the standard issue H&R bases, Either the standard rail (5" long) or the Ultra rail (6" long). The Ultra rail has a stabilizer screw in the front with 2 lock screws in the sides, one on each side, to prevent the longer stabilizer screw from moving once properly adjusted. These H&R scope rails have multiple slots to allow you a lot of adjustment to properly set your scope for the optimum eye relief. I have a Weaver base that only has 2 cross slots and while OK it lacks the possible scope positioning of the H&R base. Also, the H&R bases (scope rails) are drilled to use all three mounting holes and come supplied with the proper screws. You can get them directly from Customer Service and they take credit cards over the phone. If you call in the morning it is shipped that afternoon...

Didn't your gun come with a scope rail? They usually do unless supplied with iron sights instead. I think I have read of some that came with iron sights AND a scope rail but I could be wrong. If you plan to keep your iron sights in place and want the Ultra scope rail, measure back from the breech end and make sure your iron sights are at least 6" away from the breech end of the barrel. All of my Handi's with Iron sights are made to accommidate the Ultra rail and some carry iron sights AND the Ultra rail, some have the standard 5" rail, all fit and function fine....<><....

I like the H&R base best but its easy to cut a couple more cross slots in the Weaver base if you need them. I just cut a little notch with a hacksaw and finish it with a round file.
shot placement is everything.

Yes, get one from H&R, and while you're at it, don't forget the hammer extension.
