BSA Scopes

Hi all,
Are any of you using BSA scopes on your handi-rifles? I have been thinking about getting one, but wanted to hear some opinions as to the quality of their optics.

From My experience and those that I have read about, buying BSA scopes can be a crap shoot. There are those that have good ones that they like and others with the same scopes that have been less than desirable. I'm 50/50 with 2, a red dot that fogged up on me and a 3-12x44 air rifle scope that works fine on a heavy spring air gun. There are a few good buys in economy scopes out there that would make your money better spent if you require a low cost scope. The Simmons 4.5-14x40 ATV, 2.8-10x44 and 3.8-12x44 Aetecs, Swift Premier 676 4-12x40 are a few that come to mind that I know have an excellent track record in the $80-$125 price range.

OK, thanks guys. I'll check out some Simmons scopes-I've got one of the cheap simmons scopes from wally world and have been happy with it so that is the direction I will probably go.

I can very happily recommend the Simmons ATV (All Target Variable).  It is made in the Philipines, is fully multi coated.  I have two and could not be happier with them.  Got them both off ebay.  Can't remember who the supplier was.  Simmons has not made them in several years but there are still some new ones floating around out there.

I have a BSA Classic 3-12X 50mm on my .223 synthetic and haven't had any problems with it.  I haven't had any problems with the cheaper Bushnells (and Red Heads) either, but Tascos and Simmons are IMO what you call junk.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a 4X shotgun simmons scope on my 357 Maxie like it want another
 for my 44 Mag. This isNOT junk. I have never had a good Bushnell.
 They all have cheapies. Never bought a new one all came on guns I bought. Just my 2 cents Marv.

I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic in 6.5-20x50 on my bull barrel .223 and it is a great scope. I also have a Simmons 30mm Red Dot that is outstanding. They are made in the USA (I think) and have a good warranty....<><.... :grin:

Well, MSP, not quite made in the US...the WTC 18 and ATV are both made in the Philippines, not that it is bad, I have 2 Bushnell Scopechiefs that are in the Bushnell Elite 4200 class but without the latest coatings, made in the Philippines...as is the Nikon Buckmaster, an excellent scope, also. Lots of good stuff coming out of the Philippines nowadays. Most of the junk is coming from PRC....Peoples Republic of China....but even China has some good stuff, the Muellers for instance are of Japanese components, including the glass, then built in China. The more expensive Simmons scopes, the Whitetail Expedition line are also made in the Philippines..... :wink:

My air rifle came with a BSA and so far I have no real complaints about it. But optically it's not the equal of the lower line Bushnell scopes. Only reason I have it is it came on the gun when I bought it. Until it breaks I'll leave it on. I don't shoot the gun that much so maybe it will last.

I'd strongly suggest you take a look at the lower priced Bushnell scopes instead. I've thoroughly wrung out the entire Bushnell product line and they are all uniformly fine bargains in their price range. I have at least one gun wearing every product line they make at this time and all are holding up fine. Optically Bushnell scopes are hard to beat and I've had no mechanical problems either.

Been using the Trophy and Elite scopes for a bunch of years and now the rest of the lines for about the last 1.5 years or more with complete satisfaction.

I just went out and looked at one of those Simmons red rind scopes I have in the junk pile.  I don't think "China" is any place in the USA.  A .30-30 shook it's guts out so it wouldn't adjust anymore.  That's what I call high quality. :eek:

I'll have to agree with Graybeard.  I started out with a Bushnell Banner (I think it was a 3-8X 32mm) I bought new in 1965 for $25.  It served well until #1 son dropped it out of a John Deere cab tractor about 10 years ago.

Bass Pro's Red Head scopes are made by Bushnell and seem to be pretty good scopes.  At least they will focus on all powers, unlike the new Tasco I replaced with the Red Head.

If a hunting gun/scope combination will shoot a inch or less at 100 yards, there's nothing wrong with the scope!

I've two Bushnell 3 X 9 scopechiefs lying in my junk drawer, both with broken windage adjustments. Both had been mounted on a Marlin Mountie 22( not famous for it's heavy recoil).  Conversely, I've a Bushnell  straight 4X scopechief mounted on my Savage 24V that has taken a lot of 3 inch #4 Magnums over the years with no problem.  Optics are pretty good on it.  I suspect it can be a crap shoot.

I switched all my scopes to bushnell. I amusing the lower priced banners in 3x9x40 and as said earlier they are clearer than any of the tasco and simmons I ever owned. I like the idea of the quick adjustment to make them clear.  I will never buy another tasco or simmons again. The bushnells hold up fine on my rifles and handguns. For my money you cant beat it

I'm running the fixed 4x $24.99 Wally World special on my 30-30, 357 Max and 45-70. No problems with any of them as yet, and the 45-70 has seen quite a number of 405 HP's driven at 1600 fps+ through it. Are they cheap? Yes, but they beat my eyes and irons and fit my wallet too.

I just checked my Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 on my .223, you guys are so right, Philipines...What had me confused (besides old age) was when I called doing some research on which inexpensive Red Dot I wanted to try on my .22 Mag coyote gun with Survivor stock I was setting up, I found out to get a repair or replacement on the Simmons I only had to send it down south somewhere, the Carolina's I think. Anyway that $28.00 Red Dot has held up fine and was so well liked, 3 or my hunting buddies both here and Maine have gotten them!!!....<><.... :grin:

By the way. Scatter gunner, thanks for that Ncstar, it does display some disturbing parralax and smear of the red dot but it is fun.... :D
