Ballsitic tips are typically for varmints like prairie dogs and stuff like that. I wouldn't use them on Coyotes unless you're not using the pelts. They're very explosive. I love them for what I do, and shoot them exclusivly in my Ruger 22-250. I like the nuttin-but-chunks results.

What works best of course is subject to the specific gun. What works well in one might not work well in another. If you're doin' varmints though, the ballistic tip is a great place to start.   :-D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

For varmints I would use the 110gr Hornady V-max bullet. They are super accurate in most any rifle.

For serious hunting, deer, elk and moose the 140gr Barnes Triple shock would be my choice for unbeatable accuracy and performance.

BT's are not my piece of cake nor are the Hornady's SST, both have plastic tips and very fragile at high speed.

Ballistic Tips are highly accurate and work very well on deer sized game in the deer calibers. There is some confusion because Ballistic Tips are also made to be varmint bullets in the smaller calibers. The .270 130 grain BT over 57 grains of AA-3100 has been highly accurate in the several .270s I loaded for.

My hunting buddies report that load ALWAYS expands. It's instantly lethal on rib cage shots. Shoulder shots have always killed, but ruin a lot of meat.

It's a matter of taste, mostly. In my hunting days, I saw a lot of long tracks and lost deer to bullets that did not expand. I'll take my chances that a bullet will expand too much over the chance that one won't expand at all.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

Why pay for expensive bullets when the .270 kills deer like taking a breath -- using proper, plain vanilla soft points?     You can use a Hornady 130 gr' spire point on any deer out there.    They don't come too big for that bullet.....if your rifle can shoot them accurately.      If you start it out at only 2975 fps, it'll still reach the 400 yd' line doing 2098 fps and carrying 1271 ftlbs of energy (per Lee Shooter program).     I'd expect that to be more than enough to stop the 'buck of the woods' anywhere.     Not that I recommend 400 yd' shooting.     Just that 2098 fps velocity will still open that bullet and get the job done on a monster at that distance.

If your rifle doesn't like those bullets you can always kill deer cleanly with Core-Lokts or Power Points from the other big names out of a 270 any day.

Take care.
