Youth 50 Cal Loads Needed...
« on: November 13, 2004, 06:15:06 PM »
Hi to all,
Ive got a CVA Staghorn  50 caliber rifle.....
i need a load or two  (777 FFG powder is what i have......2 POUNDS!!!)
for my daughter & her upcoming Youth Deer Hunt.  The 20 gauge we got for her beats her up!!!!!
I only expect her to shoot at no more than 50 yards( i will be with her, so I can see to that...).
I have Precision Rifles 180 gr. QT bullets (.40 " bullet ,  .50" Sabot ),
I got them as they are the lightest saboted bullets I could find in .50 caliber ( less mass = less recoil ).  One fellow on here  used a 40 grain load of 777 ffg with a 240 gr. Cheap Shot Saboted bullet and got a chrony'd muzzle velocity of 1321.....can i go a bit less to get a bit lower???

Any help is appreciated!!!!!
Thanks! Brown Trout.

I load  both my Grandsons CVA Eclipse rifles with 2 30 gr. Pyro pellets and the recoil is quite managable. Number 1 Grandson shot a 8pt. yesterday with his. Took out both lungs and expired within 75 yds.
Deactivated at member's request after he tried to raise price on item in classifed when Redhawk1 offered to buy at listed price.

Check your local laws, some state you cannot go below 40 gr.  You want enough energy to make a clean kill and I think you should not go below 40 gr.  JMHO.

I setup a light load for my wife this year. What's important to remember is that while less bullet mass will generate less recoil (given the same velocity) it will also have much less energy. With that bullet you could go as high as 90-100 gr of powder and still have low recoil. Case in point, my wife's shooting a 295 gr Powerbelt pushed by 70 gr of Triple Seven. This load is very low recoil and still has good velocity (can't remember the velocity at the moment).

I would go the other route myself. Go with a heavier bullet (240ish) and keep your powder around 60-70 gr. Remember that even a muzzleloader shooting full power loads (non-magnum) will generally recoil less than a 20 gauge shooting slugs. In a muzzleloader 180 gr bullets are really underpowered and shooting low powder charges will make it even worse. After all, 50 cal round balls are in that weight range. If your worried about her being able to load it herself, go with a powerbelt. They do make 245 gr versions as well.

I would recommend using a heavier (240-250gr) bullet and loads around 60 grains or so.  The recoil should be almost non-existent.  You don't want her wounding one for lack of umph either.
