My son will be hunting with his .50 cal CVA Youth Hunter percussion rifle this weekend. He is nine so I'm trying to find a happy medium concerning recoil. With a 50 yd zero, is a patched roundball atop 70 gr Pyro RS enough punch for deer to say 60 yards with lung shots?

In my opinion, Yes. The most that I use is about 85 grains, a 45-70 case full, and I have shot deer out to 100 yards. Shot placement is the main thing.

just make sure he understands theball must be on top of the powder..good luck dave

yup, yup. Remember, the original 45-70 load was only 70 grains of black, and it was throwing a heavy conical. With a roundball you will get more velocity and a flatter trajectory for a ways. Should be great out to even 100 yards with a little practice.
