Sighted my new toy in (G2 Contender)
« on: November 15, 2004, 05:40:40 AM »
Hi all, I am from the H&R forum. :D I decided to get back into TC Contenders and picked me up a G2 and a 14'' 7-30 Waters barrel. Installed me a Weaver 2x28 handgun scope. This 7-30 really shoots great. I fired almost a whole box of shells. Good thing I bought 4 boxes.  After sighting it in I tried one more shoot at a fresh target at 40 yards. Centered the bullseye, would have shoot more but needed to go watch the Steelers. Can not waite to take it hunting. I'll be hunting from a 15 foot 2 man ladder stand with a rail around it, so I  should have a pretty good rest. Farthest shoot will be 100 yards. Will not take a shot unless I have a rest. I would like some feed back from all of you on using the 2x weaver at 100 yards. Do you think it is enough scope. I looked thru a Bushnell 2-6x32 and it just was not as good as the weaver IMHO. When I looked thru the Weaver I knew it was the scope I would be most comfortable with.

I am just wondering if you shot you gun at 100 yards?  Seeing's how you plan to shoot out to 100 yards. As far as the scope, I do not think you will have a problem at that distance. Good luck hunting  :D

I'm planning on shooting it this weekend if I can find a place to shoot it at 100 yards. There are no actually gun clubs or ranges around here. I live out of the city limits, but do not have a place to shoot 100 yards. Right know I have it shooting dead on at 40 yards. Thanks for the reply.

The problem that I have with variable power pistol scopes is that with the higher magnifications the eye relief is too short, making the gun difficult to hold and shoot.  I have several 2-8 scopes and I prefer 2 power scopes on my hunting guns.

I tried the 2-6x32 Bushnell on 2x and there was a big difference between it and the Weaver straight 2x. The weaver looks like it has for FOV. It might be me but it looks like it does.

I have a 2x fixed Bushnell on my 14" .375 Win. barrel.  I love the 2x magnification (or lack thereof) for close range shots.  I find that I can hold it real steady for a short freehand shot.  I shot mine at 100 yards, and the results were not pretty.  I feel confident that I could hit a deer at 100 yards with the 2x, but I had better have a darn good rest.  That bullseye is awfully hard to see at 100 yards with a 2x scope, but I didn't buy it for ultra-long shots.  Here in PA it is rare to get shots that far when hunting in the thick stuff, which is what I will be in in 2 weeks.  Can't wait!!
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I also have a 14" 7-30 as my primary deer getter. I have a Bushnell 2-6X and I keep it on 2X 90% of the time while hunting. I have killed deer at 80 yards and had no problems.

I sometimes shoot at a 100 yard range from a rest and the higher powers work well there. I would have no problem with a fixed 2X for all my hunting situations.
