These are sweet guns!
« on: November 15, 2004, 06:12:04 AM »
Just got a new H&R Ultra slug gun in 20 ga at a gun show.  I am very impressed.  This is my first NEF/H&R.  I have some Qs that ya'll can help me with.

1. Can you put a 223 or 7mm 08 barrel on this action?  The Ultra I think is different that the SB1 Pardner action but the literature is unclear about putting a high powered barrel on SB1 Ultra action.  You can put any barrel on the SB2 but the SB1 Pardner is limited.  Does that limitation apply to my SB1 Ultra?

2. I want to put on a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9 that I am taking off an old 30 06.  I am getting a set of Burris Zee rings for the Weaver base that came with the H&R.  What how high for the rings be?  Med or high?

:D Welcome to the club DGrig! If you will look around on this site someone posted the phone number for H & R ...Give them a ring and tell them what you have and they will be glad to answer any questions you might have and advise you as to what can and cannot be fitted to your receiver.  Happy shooting!

According to the H&R site, the Ultra slug 12Ga is an SB2 reciever, but the 20 is an SB1.

However the Heavy barrel models are BOTH SB2 frames.

Do like deadeye says, write the S# down and call NEF customer service and ask.  Hopefully it is an SB2.

Good luck on it.

You can put shotgun barrels on rifle actions, but you can't put rifle barrels on shot gun actions. This will hopfully give you the info you need.

NBC
Ya gotta look on their website cause some of the slug guns are listed as SB2 receivers.

Yhey must do that to handle some of the higher pressure slug loads out there.

the shotgun that is sb2 could rightly be called sb3. the receiver is for 10ga barrels and 12ga bull barrels only (this receiver would be the one that come on the 12ga ultra slug hunter). the receiver on the 20ga ultra slug hunter is a sb1 and can't be fitted with rifle barrels.

Dgirg don't worry about it you just bought a H&R/NEF which are very addictive you will soon have 3 or more rifle reivers and 2 or more shotgun receivers for you to send back for more barrels .

Thanks for the info on the receiver.  Any thoughts on rings?  I like Burris steel rings and they have a Zee ring for the Weaver mounts.  Don't know what height, and SWFA conldn't help me on the phone.

As far as the rings go, I would highly recommend the Signature Zee rings, they don't require lapping to prevent stress on the scope and will not leave ring marks on the tube. MidwayUSA has these on sale right now for $25 and just incase you have alignment problems, can get the offset insert kit to allow you to mechanically center the scope then bore sight it without ever touching the turret adjustments. My .204 Ruger handi was way off when I mounted the scope, but using the +/-.05 inserts was able to perfectly zero the reticle without turning the adjustments. This keeps the image optically centered where the best possible resolution is possible.

The height just depends on the scope power rings size and position and if it interferres with the hammer, it is usually the determining factor as to medium or high ring selection. Some of mine use medium, some use high. High will work for sure, but I like mine as low as possible so I try mediums first. Sometimes the hammer just clears with the mediums, you need a few thousanths of clearance when the hammer falls dues to overtravel, or you'll end up with marks on the scope. I like to mount mine without the hammer extension, if possible.

Actually mitchel you didn't see what I saw.

This is from the NEF site

Model Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe
Ammo 12 Gauge (SB2-988)
20 Gauge(SB2-928)

at this page  http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/index.php?cat=3&subcat=17

Apparently there is one 20ga receiver they list as an SB2.
