Ok, Somebody talk me out of this ....
« on: November 15, 2004, 08:32:56 AM »
I am becoming a SERIOUS handi-holic.

I am thinking about selling my Ruger M77 - Mark II .270 and buying an NEF in .270.

My Ruger is a TACK DRIVER with handloads. It likes cheap (ok - maybe inexpensive is a better word) Sierra 130gr. SP bullets. It has taken COUNTLESS deer, one elk, and a whole bunch of prarie dogs in the off season with my pet load.

Am I crazy for wanting to trade a fine firearm like this to feed my current passion for single-shots?

No....your not crazy at all...your just beginning to change your perspective on things, wanting to increase the difficulty of the hunt, and wanting something new :-D

Going with a single shot doesn't make a-lot of sense to someone who has never owned one...and for those that have and do ...it makes pefect sense...

I don't know if it is crazy or not but have had the same feelings about my Savage 30-06.

I could get an '06 barrel, have it reamed and re-bored to 338-06 and just about break even.

BIG SCARRY STEP though!  :(

My Savage is not what I'd call a tac driver (1" - 1 1/2" at 100yds) but plenty good for deer to 300yds for sure, if I do my part.

My opinion only sell duds, find the money somewhere else.  The way I am feeding the addiction is to used my coffee/ lunch money. I get a down payment together then put the gun I want on 90 day lay away then every pay day I make a payment and eventually it comes home.

My budget is not that much so all I can afford are handi's and such but it works. I have gotten an ultra 243 and a marlin 17v this year doing that.  And as a side bonus since I had had the habbit of a coffee and a snack with that money going to guns I have lost significant wieght this year.

You're a smart man.

I set aside a small amount each payday for huntin' stuff.  It just hurts so much to wait!!!!!

This is only a scary step becuase my Ruger shoots so well, and I hvae had it for going on 12 years.

Maybe I need to follow Aulrich's advice and save a litlle at a time.  I can keep the Ruger and pass it on to my son.

There, the pills seem to be kicking in ... I feel much better ......

I wonder if my health insurance covers therapy for handiholic-ism.   :-D

I'm with Aulrich, keep that tack driver, I've seen it too many times here, shooters wishing they had kept a gun that they sold. The idea is to get more guns, not just the same quantity, but new additional guns!

Yep I have to agree. Only dump a gun if it is a dud.  If you've had it for eleven or twelve years I'm betting you have a lot of fond hunting memories connected with that Ruger and sooner or later you will be kicking yourself if you let it go.

I've got the same rifle in .22-250 target configuration. I wouldn't do it. I thought I could get two Handis for what my Ruger is worth. It's temptinig but don't do it. I  LOVE the wood grain on my ruger, but it's a heavy gun to haul around whild blasting PD's. It's got a much better trigger though. MUCH BETTER!

You must resist.

Keep the Rugrat.... I mean Ruger, sorry bout that.  Its a fine rifle and you will later be sorry for getting rid of it.  I hate to think of the guns that I have owned and let go for one reason or another.  Guess it made sense at the time but not now.  Guess I am getting possessive in my old age.  The more the better.  He who dies with the most guns.........is still dead, but his grandkids get all the fruits of his labors.   :)  :)  :)

MyJerry;

Those Rugers that are tack drivers are few and far between.
Keep it and wait JUST a little while to get the money. You'll be happy you did.

Keep that Ruger and pass it on to your son. You can get a Handi anywhere, but you will never replace a gun like that Ruger "with all the memories" once it is gone.

MtJerry, I've been at that crossroads to many times and had no one to tell me. I've traded lot of guns off I should have kept. EXAMPLE: Winchester M94 Big Bore carbine 307 Winchester, Marline 336ER 356 Winchester, Remington M7400 35 Whelen. Makes me almost sick to think about it.

I haven't been able to sell a gun yet. I just can't let go. Since Handi's are so inexpensive, I'd keep the Ruger and buy a new or used handi.

I have a problem with selling guns.  I'm a Lefty.  Lefty bolt guns just don't have much trade/resale value.  They're harder to move I guess.

I sold the first gun I have in quite a while. It's a Ruger .44 Mag. I just don't have any use for hand guns since I moved here to Utah. The only other gun I've sold was a Llama .32 auto pistol. I can't remember selling anything else. :?

if you get the bug again let me know, i'll trade you my 270 handi with a 223 barrel straight up.

I might even sell it outright ....    after deer season that is.

I can't imagine selling a good Ruger bolt-gun!
You need serious help for even going public with that question there, brother!   :-D

Edit:   In all honesty, I've 'sacrificed'    one all-weather Ruger in .30-06 to help a daughter and her husband pay for the delivery of our first grandchild.....    They were married for two years and still couldn't get proper insurance coverage when he changed jobs so I 'sacrificed'  :( the rifle to help them out.     Good grief that hurt

Well, I sold my CVA staghorn this past weekend. Going to use that money plus put some more with it within the next month. Hopefully, when I go to Tn. I can purchase a handi in 22 hornet. I know a .223 might be a better choice , but it's a nostalgia thing with me. I NEVER HAD ONE!    I'll save a little more so I can get a decent scope and have it mounted and of Course get that bad boy sighted in. Hellacatcher, can you help me do that? :yeah:  :D  :D
