Being new to this forum I'm worried that this has been beat to death, but I want to move into hunting with a handgun. This deer season I'm using a friends Ruger .44, and it's a ton of fun to shoot; but am researching my first handgun purchase. I'm wondering about the Thompson Centers or the Savage Strikers when it comes to packing them around the woods deer hunting or squirrel hunting or whatever. If you put a scope on them as well, it seems that it might not carry very well, ... but

Anyway, how is the best way to pack these beasts around without actually holding it in your hands?

I haven't tested either method extensively yet, but I have the following two options on hand for my scoped 10" Contender to try this season:

I've carried a 10" Contender and 14" Encore for hunting, both in .44 mag.  The short Contender is about as big as you want to go with a holster, for me the longer barrels tended to hang up when you wanted to draw.  I will be using a sling for the first time with the Encore, so far has been easy to carry and throw up for an off-hand shot while punching paper, I'll see how it does on deer in two weeks.

I carry my .44 mag 12 incher in the Bandito listed above without any issues.  Great product!

I like my 14" Bandolier holster because it protects the pistol while I am climbing in a treestand or riding in the truck.  I use is with either a 10" or 14" barrel.  I just like the protection it affords.   I am going to purchase a side holster for the 10" 44mag without a scope.

I normally use an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster for my 14" barrels, both scoped and non-scoped.  I find it nice as far as hauling the Contender around, but they are kind-of a pain in the butt when it is time to draw...the 14" barrel is a tough one to draw with that long barrel.  I have also used a sling from time to time (installed a sling stud in the forearm and attached the other end to the grip with a homemade velcro strap) but I am not sold on that either.  I just took a look at that Bandito listed above...looks like a great product that I'm going to look into.  

Wasn't there also a post or two in this forum dealing with a cordless drill holster that doubled as a TC holster and was awfully cheap to buy?

Just found the cordless drill holster (that doubles as a Contender holster) at Harbor Freight online.

flyfisher,post a picture of a Contender in that drill holster if you can. I just can't imagine it.

Hou5ton, I have a 10" and a 14" with a scope. If it is lght enough to shoot on my way in or out of a stand or if I am actually hunting, it is in my hand. A 14" Contender balances in the hand very nicely. I carry it around in a case and climb the tree with it in the case to protect it.

I had a sling on it originally and I liked it for walking but trying to climb or move around in a stand I was always banging the gun on something or it would come sliding around my body and smack metal.
If I don't feel like holding the Contender in the tree stand, I slip it in to the partially open case that is tied nearby. It works like a big holster.

There are 2 pictures posted in the Members Gallery, page 7, titled:  contender and cheap holster and contender and cheap holster 2.  They were posted by MnMike, and I personally thank him for posting these pictures.  It seems like a great idea I am going to try in the very near future.

Guess I am the odd duck out.  I carry both my scoped and unscoped Contenders with 10" or 14" barrels in the pistol packaging holsters on my belt.  I do not see all the big inconveinces others do with this method.  I use a sling once I get to a treestand.  I hunted both days last weekend with a 14" 45-70 in my belt holster.
