Cost of drilling/taping a Ruger Blackhawk?
« on: November 16, 2004, 06:00:35 AM »
Hi All,

My father owns a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt with a 7.5" barrel and he's always wanted to mount a scope on it.  I know tons of these have been drilled and tapped for scopes over the years.  I'm wondering how much trouble a procedure like that is for the Blackhawk and about what I could expect to pay to have it done?  Are there any pitfalls/precautions to be aware of?  Is there a right way/wrong way to do it?  Anyone with experience with this who could fill me in a bit on the process would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

E.A. Brown in Minnesota (www.eabco.com) will sell his "Tri-Force" mount for about $50.00 --- INSTALLED !!  I had one put on a Blackhawk 357 a couple of years ago and am very satisfied with it ! It comes with 3 rings (Tasco) , but I am only using 2. Can save a bit on the shiping also - just remove the cylinder and ship ground. Take a look at them - they are very nice, and they do good work !

Alternatively, Brownell's offers a base specifically for Rugers.  It replaces the rear sight and requires two extra holes to be drilled.  I had a one modified and mounted on my 4" .22 SP-101 and it costed me $40.

Howd'y:
Another alternative to D&T is a Weaver Mount that replaces the rear sight and clamps to the barrel in front of the receiver.
I have one on my .44 SBH Bisley. Put it on myself in a few minute's.
It is rock solid and I shoot Hot loads.
I know there are some that would say Junk, but I'll bet those are
Guy's that have not used one.

Well, I did try the Weaver mount - and it is not even comparable to the EABCO Tri-Force mount. I will not use as strong a term as "junk" - but, I was definitely NOT satisfied with it. I am satisfied with the EABCO. And, it is also better looking on the gun - more streamlined.

:cb2: Here's yet another endorcement for the EABCO Tri-Force mount. Brown put a scope mount on a Ruger Bisley for me years ago, and I couldn't be happier with their work. They used larger than normal screws for more contact area with a stronger, better hold. I sent them my scope along with the gun, and they mounted it for me. Fine people, excellent work, and well worth the price.

I have paid around $8 a hole but most aftermarket mounts utilize the hole already put there by Ruger and drilling isn't necessary.
