Problem with Super Blackhawk Hunter...Help
« on: November 16, 2004, 06:35:54 AM »
Well, I went out last weekend and shot my SBHH for the first time.  I must say that the recoil is not bad at all...Actually, I think it is a pussycat.  I am used to shooting 2 3/4" Partition Gold shells out of my shotguns so I was expecting something in that realm...Not even close.

Anyway, after about 15 or so rounds I couldn't cock the hammer back anymore.  I was baffled and couldn't figure out why.  I unloaded the gun and looked it over...It seems that the base pin latch allowed the base pin to slide out a little bit.  That little movement stopped the hammer from cocking.  I slid the base pin back in and the gun fired fine.  After another 5 or so rounds it happened again.  I again slid the base pin back and checked the base pin latch to make sure it is ok.  It happened again and again I fixed it...

My question is...Is there a way to tighten the spring in the base pin latch to keep it from allowing the base pin to slide out to a position that I cannot fire the gun?  Help please...

This problem will not stop me from hunting with it but it is a pain when target shooting.

This is a common problem with hard kickers in Ruger SA's.  Recoil is pulling the base pin out.  Wolffe makes a replacement spring that is heavier.  A better fix is to install a Belt Mountain Locking base pin.  These have a set screw that is tightened and prevents the pin from walking out.  I have these on my 41 mag and my 45 colt ruger blackhawks, and recommend them.

HTH,
Regards,

Tom

Im not sure why Ruger hasnt fixed this problem yet since it is so common. I have had this problem with both of my super blackhawks, put the Belt Mountain base pins in and problem solved.

Would you suggest the new locking base pin as well as an upgraded spring kit?  I have been looking at the Wolff Spring Kit with the hammer spring, base pin spring and trigger springs...Does the locking base pin set screw apply pressure to the barrel to keep itself in place?

I would recomend using both the spring kit and the locking base pin. I have done this and have no more problems at all.
Im not sure if just the stronger base pin spring will do the trick by itself, but you could try that first and see.
The only disadvantage to the locking base pin is that you will need a small hex head wrench to un-snug the little set screw to remove the cylinder. Not a big deal though.

I ordered the Belt Mtn #5 Locking Base Pin...Everything is good now.  Thanks for the heads up...I think I may order that spring kit in the future but for right now I am golden.

You're going to like that #5 pin. It not only works to hold its self in with the set screw, its concentric rings make it easier to pull out and being oversized it take away the slop with the cylinder and it looks good too. I have them in 3 out of 4 of my Rugers.

I had the same problem on a Ruger Vaquero. I got some of the same suggestions you did on the SASS website.

http://www.sassnet.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=2

If they work, great. But one suggestion I got was that the actual problem was likely that the latch which holds the cylinder pin in place was likely too large, and allowed the cylinder pin to force its way past the latch under recoil. If the latch was ground down a little, and ground down properly, so that it fully seated on the cylinder pin, that might fix the problem. A stronger latch spring, and a bigger (Belt Mountain) cylinder pin might work, but may be bandaid approaches.

Make sure that cylinder pin latch is all the way in, I always press mine. Small burr or tight fit and wouldn’t slide in its place. Newer had the problem on 45 Bisley, even with 325 SWC, full throttle. Friend had this problem on his 44 Flattop, two or three rounds (250 SWC, 22 gr. of old 2400) and pin was out. Suddenly, he discovered that latch doesn’t go in; he pressed it and bingo, no more pin sliding forward. However, stronger latch spring will be improvement. If you are going to by new base pin, get #5, way better than standard one.

for you people that dont know Kelye (belt mountain) also sells a heavier duty base pin retaining spring. If your a cheapskate and dont care about tightening up your gun its usually all it takes to keep the base pin in. I think they can be hand for a couple bucks. He gave me a few samples last year to try and they worked.

I did opt for the #5...Installed it the same day it came in...No modifications necessary.  Check it out...
