Homebrew lube.

If your into makin' yer own here's a good 'n.
One 4 oz. bottle of Castor oil. (any drug store or WallyWorld)
About an oz. of beeswax, and a table spoon 'er so of Murphy's Oil Soap to taste. (WHAT :? )
Heat the Castor, add the beeswax to melt, add the Murphs. It will foam so becareful not to get it on Mommas stove.
The Murhps acts as a binder to mix the other two.
You can experiment with thickness by adding more or less besswax.
Thicker makes a DANDY bullet lube.
Castor oil has the unique property of protecting metal even under extreme heat. (as is racing engine oil..Castrol)
This makes a good patch lube and stays soft in cold weather and seems to NEVER dry out.
For p/r/b I prefer Lehigh Valley, but use the above for huning when the rifle might be loaded all day.
Give 'er a whirl. For under 4 bucks it makes plenty of lube and has superior metal preservative qualities and does NOT smell of BenGay.
I even wipe down the outside metal if hunting in the rain to moisture proof and the stuff will NOT wash off even in a downpour.
It makes a good exterior metal protector for storing your guns in the humid summer.
I once shot a T/C .50 barrel over a months period this past monsson N.E. Ohio summer THIRTY times without cleaning ONCE.
Just fired a few rounds, loaded the thing, ran a Moose Snot patch down the bore over the charge and let 'er set till next time. The rifle sat in the humid garage.
NO RUST! Not one bit.
When I finally cleaned the thing it cleaned up easy.

Sounds good....Is it difficult finding castor oil in the drug stores? What about Castrol Racing Oil....I didn't think it was castor oil.
How does it work as a Borebutter substitute in the bore?

Here's mine. 4 parts lard, 1 part beeswax. This is an original English lube, and is better than Borebutter as a presevative. If you insist on the Ben-Gay smell, add a few drops of oil of wintergreen.

I like  50/50 mink oil shoe dressing, and goop handcleaner,  or for warmer weather  60/40.   The mink oil is a paste, in a plastic tub, and the goop is not gritty, just smooth handcleaner... works well for patch lube,  never tried it for bullet lube,  prolly too soft...Les

Castor oil is common in most any drug store or WallyWorld.
No do NOT use Castrol racing oil. It has castor oil in it but it's still a petroleum product and black powder and petroleum equals TAR!
And NO Castor oil does not smeel bad...that's Cod Liver oil that smells bad.

Oh...Beg to differ.  Believe me if you've ever attended motorcycle roadraces and witnessed 2-stroke bikes going 'round the track, you'll never forget the smell of castor oil.  It stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x

savageT, Yes, you can, and you might even want to try olive oil. You might need more wax to stiffen it up some when the weather is hot.

It's a liquid soap sold in the kitchen cleaning department of your local variety store or grocery, comes in a plastic bottle.
