I am considering buying a 7mm08 barrel for my encore and would like to hear from anyone about the pros and cons of this cartridge

terry176,

Terry, this is a fine cartridge, one of a quartet that I think is just right for most deer hunting. Shootin' targets? It is very accurate in an accurate rifle. My 7mm-08 is put up on a Browning A-BoltII w/Boss and I wouldn't change it one bit.

That's what I think of it!

Terry, I don't know of any cons that a 7mm-08 has. I own 2, Encore pistol and a Browning A-bolt micro-hunter. Encore loaded with 130gr Sierras will usually do around 1.5 MOA and the Browning will stay under an inch on a bad day with 140gr sierras. Low recoil, accurate, and plenty of power for anything from varmints to deer.Mike

I have had a 22" Bullberry 7mm-08 for the past three years and it has performed flawlessly.  I have taken 6 deer with, the furthest was 275 yards and the average has been 75 yards.  So far, none has gone further than 30 yards after impact.  I shoot Federal Premium Ballisic tips and can achieve MOA easily at the range, usually averages a smidge over 1/2 MOA.  Some of my huntin buddies rib me alittle about the small cartidge - but I have neveer missed a deer with it nor lost one tracking - unlike the magnum crowd.

i would go with the 7mm-08, if your going to go with a .30 caliber bullet then get a 30-06, the .308 really has nothing over the 30-06 except maybe a little less recoil.

plus a 7mm bullet is perfect, if i remember right it is a .284 caliber. Thats right in-between a .270, and a .308, and is now arguably the best deer round for under 225 yards.......JMHO....hope this helps
