New NEF and H&R calibers
« on: November 17, 2004, 08:03:18 AM »
Well you know I called H&R and ask about the 500 S&W and they had barrel blanks but did not know when production would start. What I forgot to tell you was when I ask him about the 500 S&W, he said that R&D had (( 2 )) new calibers in the works. He would not say what the other one was. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Any guesses. I'm hoping 35 Remington. We all would like to see the 35 Whelen back but the key words he used was ( 2 NEW CALIBERS) Makes my head hurt to try and guess.

.35 Remington sure sounds like a possibility (I hope, I hope!!!). My other wish is to far out there to even be considered...a .348 Winchester!!!....1 out of 2 would make me VERY happy!!!!....<><....

They already have 17M2, 17 aguila will shoot in that, so I doubt that would be offered.

I probably dont fit the average mold of single shot customers, but I just want a "full" pressure chambering with 35cal

356, 358, 35whelen   rather than the 35 rem,  and I dont like the oddball diameter of the 348

and pistol cartridges should be for pistols.  I have more than one gun so more than one set of dies is not a problem.

If I want a lower energy round, I load down with a little less powder and lighter bullets.

But, I see the wishes of many differing opinions so I dont hold much hope.

6.5 X 284...would be great...or even the Swede would do

338-06...one could only hope...but is definatly a hope

Will they bring back cartridges they once had...very doubtfull...but it would be a real nice option to have a improved and expanded barrel accesory program with them on it...and to have the 26" barrels offered for each caliber would even be better....

The short mags....I don't think so...not unless they improve the receivers strenght

They probably will come out with that new .277 military round....and maybe something for the Cowboy shooting crowd.....and having a 35 Remington is always a possability.....

We'll just have to wait and see...if they ever listen to the Handi shooters and what they want and have been asking for...

They still offer a .30-30 in the Handi rifle.    They are just out of barrels in that caliber at the moment and need to make another barrel run in that size and chambering.

I guess I should qualify what I am about to say in that I have not personally had any interaction with NEF or their customer service.  I only own one handi rifle, a 223 UV.  But this is my observation from reading all of the posts that have been talking about calibers that people want and barrels they would like to have fitted.
NEF is apparently run by idiots.  You have all these people out here wanting their products and they don't even keep barrels in stock and then seem to keep it a secret when a shipment comes.  No notice, no nothing.  If I was running NEF I would have darn near anything anyone could think of, at least 2 or 3 of each of these barrels.  From what I have observed T/C has stuff chambered for just about anything you could think of, even some wildcats.  NEF lists a reasonable number of different barrels but I hear of guys waiting months for the action they sent in to be barreled and sent back just because "they have not received their shipment of barrels".  Come on NEF, are you just allowed a certain number of barrels each quarter.  Kind of like the days of the Model T.  You can have any color you want as long as it is black.  And why in the heck can't they sell unchambered barrels so we could chamber what ever we want.  A lot of us end up doing that anyway.  I bet the bean counters and lawyers run NEF.  (Present company excepted of course).  There, I feel better now, think I will take a nap now. :D

The 7.5X55 S&R is an ideal candidate for the NEF!!

Operates at 40,000 to 45,000 PSI (ejection problems lessened) and has a good accuracy reputation.  All they need to do is clean up their act in the throat dept. :(

Not gonna happen though.  Not popular enough.  TC does it tough

My brother has a K31(?) 7.5X55, nice caliber if you're rich or handload if you want to shoot it a lot, the only factory hunting ammo we found for it was $norma$. Of course, there was no internet then. He doesn't shoot it much now. He killed an elk with it 30+yrs ago....

I've been tossing around the idea of a 45-70 handi, my BC isn't exactly "handi" in the brush.  I have now abandoned that idea.   The 50 S&W is gonna be my new woods hammer... Mmmmm big ol LBTs at a leisurely 1600fps... no bullets missing ribs this time.. too big to fit between them  :) .
Badnews Bob has a Lee 360gr 50 cal improved Miniball mold.  I was wondering if it would work in the 500 on top of a load of FFg.  I dunno if there is enough case capacity tho.  I know that pyrodex and 777 blows the skirts on it so that option would be a nogo.  Mebbe step up to FFFg.

That .500 S&W looks neat. I like the 8mm mauser, .348 Winchester would be fun to play with too.

Yes, if Norma were the only way to go my S&R's would gather dust.

Handloading is the way to go.  All the standard .308 caliber bullets fit and Graf sells the cases now at $27.99 per hundred.  Dies are common, etc.

Your brother could also check the Graf web site for the Hornady 7.5 ammo.  They load a 165BTSP (would not be my bullet choice :( )  Also, AIM surplus has the Swiss GP11 surplus ammo.  Non-corrosive and always has been (the reason those rifles have nice bores!).  It's high quality ammo suitable for match shooting.  Sells for $168 per 480 rounds.

Heck, you should be getting your hands on one yourself
