blew a shot today
« on: November 17, 2004, 02:01:42 PM »
I blew a shot this afternoon. I had a nice Doe come into me about 4 pm she was about 20 yards from me she didn't have any idea that I was even in the tree stand.  she gave me a perfect shot. It must have been the nerves or i miss judged the distance or both but I shot just under her and just as I let the arrow go she took a step. The arrow struck her on the far side leg just above the knee. she took off and stopped about 60 yards that is when I saw her lift her leg and start to lick it. a little while she walked ( limped) off I gave her about 20 minutes then claimed down and retrieved my arrow I saw blood on it. and found the blood trail. it was a great one I was able to follow it for about 200 yards until it completely stopped. I did the circle check and looked and looked but couldn't find any more blood. I looked until I couldn't see anymore and almost got lost trying to find my way back to the stand

I know things like this happen but I cant stand when it happens.

Sorry to hear that Rick...I'll be brand new to bowhunting within a month and I pray that doesn't happen on my first deer with a bow. Nearly had it happen w/ a gun...and that's bad enough. Mebe u'll find her...somewhere...somehow. But ur not the first and certainly won't be the last. Let that be some solace.

the way she was moving and the way the blood ended and the way she acted after the shot I know she was not hit real good. All I did was give her a glancing blow. I did see blood on the arrow but it was near the feathers and just a slight smear not covered in it.

I knew I blew the shot but I owed  to her to go and put a real effort to try and find her.

she acted like she didnt even know what happened or where it came from.

I've blown four shots this season. First was on a doe only 10 yards away. I shot right under her. This was the first time I ever drew back on deer and was a little nervous. Later in the same day I connected with a small spike deer. He dropped with 25 yards of where he was hit. I then missed a nice buck with my blackpowder during MD's early muzzleloader. Still kicking myself on that one.  Again I undershot.

Last Saturday I shot three times on two different deer and undershot again. I just keep thinking the deer are closer than they are.

I am heading out again tomorrow and I hope I don't make the same mistake.

Rick, is your Avatar taken in Clyde's parking lot? It is only a mile or two from where I work.  I've spent a lot of money and lunch breaks in that place.

Nope this is in one of my fire station's parkinglot.

I don't mind when I make a clean miss but to draw blood and not retreave the animal  gets to me. I went back thismorning but  it rained heavy lastnight and I couldnt find any blood to track.
