Frustrations

As you may know I have been quite frustrated this deer season. I have only seen 3 deer and missed 2 of them with my new Savage 7mm-08. Anyway I was doing some reloading tonight for my 357 Revolver and I was thinking over what I am doing wrong. Then like a bolt of lightning it hit me. I need to get back to basics. I got out my T/C hawken 50 caliber. My dad bought me that muzzleloader when I was 17. He told me that I was going to learn to make one shot count. I cleaned it up and set it aside. I molded 20 round balls for it and put 5 in my loading block and put my flask filled with goex ffg black powder, measure, short starter and capper in my possible bag. I am leaving all my high tech toys at home such as my 2 way radio my cell phone, range finder and pager. I lost my dad 10 years ago and have drifted further and further away from what he has taught me. I have been in the I need all the toys and gadgets that come along. Time for some 50 yard round ball, peep sight shots and harvest some deer with lots of smoke. This is going to sound weird, but, I feel like a 50 pound weight was lifted off me and I am right with the deer woods again. Tomorrow night I will clean up all my modern firearms and put them away. Muzzleloader for the rest of the season for me.

Bubba,
You've got me thinking and that's a dangerous pastime!  I have a muzzle loader: 50 cal. side-hammer 1:32 twist Traditions that is a modern version designed for sabots and pyrodex.  I'd like to get into black powder, patch and ball, but lack the equipment.  The gunclub I joined a few years ago is into b/p tournaments, and I think I'd like to start a project building a pennsylvania long-gun kit this winter.  Always wondered what those flinters were like anyhow????  But those Underhammers...........now that's a thing of beauty I would really enjoy building, anyone else in New York State shoot those things????

I dont own an underhammer, But, I have a traditions flint lock. It shoots well and has the 1:48 twist. I do know a guy from Cicero who builds shoots and has averything a man can imagine. Maybe I could hook you up withhim to get you going.

He has built a few. He is more of a consultant than a builder. he is the head machinist at babbitt bearing. He has helped me out a lot when I could not get my guns to fire like I needed and has done some work on guns fo rme. I will be seeing him this weekend and see if it is ok to do this as he is abit touchy sometimes. I have no dount we can all get together, but will ask him first. he has a camp up here on Black Lake and comes up weekends to hunt and relax and fish and relax during the summer. I will drop you a line when I get to talk to him.

bubba: started out 40 years ago with the long bow, then the first compound(allen ) then some military rifles into sporters, and a smoke pole.
I have to say hunting in them years I have taken many whitetails ,the last five years I am back to my flinters and sidelocks,as far as the bow hunting the bones are getting to old to draw a bow
I still hunt on good days with my 54 cal. flinter and bad weather days with my New Englander 54 cal.
I also have to say I only have one center fire rifle left in the gun safe a BNZ42 8x57 mauser,I just sold my A3-03 springfield ,which has been with me since 1969 to a guy who wanted it for a long time .
I really feel bad this year because this is the first year in 40 years that I did not purchase my hunting lic:
I seen over the years such a huge decline in the no# deer in the southern zone it like just wasteing time sitting and frezzing ,sorry to say last year hunted 10 days and seen only 2 does up near deposit.n.y. and still the DEC is still giving out large no# of doe tags.crazy
I hunted pa last year also and scored on there opening day with my 54 cal. flinter a huge 8 pointer with a 20 inch spread,@ did see alot of deer in the woods
