cut down to 18" barrel 308 or 7-08

I am thinking about getting an encore barrel in either 308 or 7-08 and having it cut down to 18"; or maybe just ordering one from a custom shop.  Anybody know if this is a good move, bad move, stupid move or what.  I have a 7-30 super 16 on a carbine rig and like the size and feel it has plus its a shooter and kinda sorta hope that one of the choices on an encore would be as good.

I have a 16 1/4 Virgin Valley pistol barrel in 308 I used this years for deer hunting and toying with trying one of my rifle butt stocks on it.  I have a stainless 24" heavy barrel in 300wsm I bought from Bullberry last year and my have it shortened and rechambered in 308.  Not sure how much Fred will need to cut off to rechamber.

I have a 16 1/4" 250 Sav barrel from the T/C Custom Shop, as well as a 20" 350 RemMag from same. I ordered their heavy barrels as I like some weight out front and I like them both very much. A friend liked my 16 1/4" so much that he had his 7mm-08 barrel chopped to the same length.

If you are looking for velocities try comparing say a 22" 308 with a 15" 308 from reloading manuals. Somewhere in the middle will be more or less what you will have for a velocity at 18" (not exact but a general idea anyway). Sean
