Blooded my Omega
« on: November 19, 2004, 12:19:53 PM »
Well it was a lousy day to hunt when I got up, but I went out anyway. I took the Omega and went to my spot. The whole morning it was drizzy and miserable. When it got light enough to see I found I had passed where I wanted to be and so I moved back the way I came and in the proccess spooked a doe. She ran and stopped about 150, but by the time I got into position to shoot she had taken off again.

When I got where I wanted to be I stopped and wiped my glasses and busted the frame! I guess it must have been weak as it took almost no effort to do so. Man was I ticked. I ended up heading back to the car to drive home, then changed my mind and went to find my wife Angie so she could run me into the eyecare place. I was afraid that they would not have my frame because I had gotten it a little over 2 years ago. When I got there, the lady who I talked to said they could order a frame for me as all they had was the display. :x Then the eye doc came out and told her to sell me the display. Man was I happy.

Anyway it was about 10:30 when we got home so we went ahead and ate dinner and went back out. I knew my time was limited because I have to be home at 3:00 to get my son off the bus. While I was walking in to my spot I noticed a deer laying just inside the treeline 20 yds off. I couldn't tell what it was because it was laying down with it's head and rear behind a tree. Since I had an either sex and an antlerless tag I decided to shoot it. When I c ocked the Omega, the deer raised it's head and looked at me. I could tell it was a fawn but decided to shoot it anyway.

I couldn't see where the shoulders were but from where her head was I made a guess. Well I aimed wrong. I took out both shoulders with the barnes. It did not exit, but I was unable to locate the bullet. I felt around on the inside of the opposite shoulder and it was a mess.

Anyway here's my first deer with the Omega. I'll go back out tommorow because I have 2 more days this season. 2nd season I have 4 and I can use my Muzzleloader tag for that too. Then I'll have another 3 days for muzzleloader season. After that is the late firearm, and if I get my tag for it I'll have another 3 days to hunt.

Not a good picture, but hey it's a scanned polaroid.

Congratulations on making meat!  My deer this year so far is the same size, not as much meat there but it sure is tender and good.  I am going out in the morning to try for #2, so far this season isn't as good/lucky as others.  Score another one for TC....

Way to go. The little ones taste the best anyways.  :D

Nope not much meat, but it sure is good! I almost decided not to go back out, but decided to hunt the few hours I could before I had to quit. I just wished I hadn't needed to spend a hundred bucks on a new frame. :(

I killed #2, a full size doe at 11am this morning and she is at the processors cooling off.  I didn't use a muzzleloader this time as rifle season is in now for another week.  Got to get them anyway I can.

This is our general firearm too.

I shot another one tonight.

It all started this morning. I went hunting where I went yesterday albeit in a diferent spot. About 7:30-8:00 I saw a deer run off to my right, but didn't get a shot. A few minutes later the deer had come back and I was able to see it better. It was a really nice buck. Well he ran to my left and stopped  and I was able to get off a quick shot.

Well he ran off and I discovered my brother in law had scared him back to me (before the shot). We found blood but he had run to another block of woods. Well the guy who was with my BIL chased him off!  :x  :x  :x He run him off to a property a mile or so from where I had shot him!        They run me to the car and left. Boy I was ticked. I searched but I never found where exactly he ran.    Dang cut fields don't show any blood.

Well I called it a morning and went home for a lunch and then back to my spot. I ran into my father in law and he had heard what happened. Well anyway I hunted a spot for an hour before my wife came to get me. Told me to get over to one of my FIL's good properties. Said he was ticked at my BIL and wanted to make it up to me.

Well I was there for about 45 minutes before they all showed (FIL, my wife, and my GOOD BIL- Cody). We spread and sat the field edge for a while but didn't see anything. I asked Cody what was at the top of the hill behind us and found out it was another field. Well Cody and I climbed it and decided to head down the other side.

After we crested it he saw 2 deer and I ranged them at 271 yds. I noticed they were feeding in the cut corn field and that they were coming towards us. I told Cody that if I could get to 200 I could shoot. I crawled forward everytime their heads were down and stopped when they weren't. I had got 10 yds when I noticed a deer at the base of the hill. I ranged it and got 220. I crawled another 20 and 3 more deer ran towards the closest one. At about the same time 2 more came in 300+ to my left. I ranged the closest and got 201- close enough. I got my Omega up to my shoulder and prone at 201 yds took my shot. I shot at the closest deer since I could not see any size difference through my scope. Also I should note that it was almost the end of shooting hours.

Anyway after the smoke cleared I stood up and looked down but didn't see anything. I started shaking. I asked Cody if he saw where it had ran since half the deer ran (those closest to the one I shot at). I told Cody we might as well walk down and check for blood before we ran out of light. We had gotten halfway down and I saw some white 6 or 7 corn rows in. I brought my Omega up and scoped it. Dead deer! Well we walked the rest of the way down while Cody was telling me that was the most fun he'd had all season! When we got to the deer we noticed it was a little small. Another Doe Fawn!    I could not tell any difference in  the animals and just shot the closest one. Well we walked back and got my FIL and my wife. Told em about the deer and we got in the truck and went to get it. Angie said she was tired of hunting and said she'd tag it so she could be done for the year.

As a result I still have a buck tag and my FIL told me I could hunt the property again! They saw a real bruiser in there this morning!

Finally found the exit hole. It went in 2" right of spine and exited out the left buttock. 1' of both loins are ruined from being bloodshot to hell. The hole in the ribs I can almost stick my fist into. The 245 Barnes is definetly a good bullet.

Good deal Wolfhound! I have two BIL also, one doesn't hunt and the other does very little hunting.  :)
I don't usually take my deer to a processor as I like to work up the meat myself, but I had to work tonight and am leaving tomorrow to hunt two counties south of my home county.  He has skinned her out and put her in a cooler until I can get to her after the season. That still is going to cost $20 but better than a waisted deer.  The temps are still very warm for this time of year 50-60's during day and 40's at night.  They charge $65 total to fillet the tenderloin and grind up into burger the rest of the deer.

Both my BIL's hunt. Cody (13) just started last year. Travis (27) is the problem one.

Anyway,

Ok, got my third deer today with the Omega. I got an adult doe with an easy 50 yd. shot. She ran less than that and just crumpled.

Not much to tell on the story. Was a very slow day. After 8:00 nobody was seeing any deer at all. This afternoon we conducted a push to move the deer along escape paths. I really didn't want to but they needed an extra "shooter". Well for someone who didn't really want to, I ended up with most of the action. Had 2 run over me. If I'd have had a knife handy I coulda got one of em. Then I had another group of 3 and the lead deer stoped 50 yds away. One shot through the lower leg, heart and out the other side (missed that leg) and the deer ran 20 yds. My father in law was just west of me an saw the hit, run, and drop. He was very impressed. Cody who was with him shot twice and missed both.
