Rifle scopes on T/C pistols?
« on: November 19, 2004, 03:50:33 PM »
Saw a couple of pics posted on a websire the other day of a TC pistol with a rifle scope mounted on it. I doubt this would be very fun with the larger calibers, but it might work ok with the less recoil of the smaller rounds.
Anyone using a rifle scope on their TC pistols?

I second cknight98.  have used them on several pistol barrels of minimal caliber. I have one on a 14" 17HMR that shoots consistently sub MOA groups on a calm day. Works great for prairie dogs too.   KN

I use one on my OTT 221 wonder barrel shooting from a bench and it works great.  I also have tried one on my 223AI and it also is OK.  Don't think I would like one on anything with more recoil.

Yep, low or no recoiling calibers don't know the difference. I've done it on rimfire myself.

I have had an UltraDot 30mm red dot scope on my 7x30 Contender for a couple years now and the more I use it, the better I like it.  Shots at deer out to 110 yards have been no problem for me.  The tiny red dot can be easily found and seen in any low light deer hunting condition.

I tried it on my .223, once. Elcheapo Bushnell with no eye relief, it's a good thing I was wearing safety glasses.

Well guys, you can use rifle scopes beyond 24x with specialty handguns using the 308 & 284 class cartridges, but you need to know what you are doing and I would advise having a brake or porting of some kind.  You CANNOT have a full field of view and pull the trigger with these cartridges and not get hurt.  Have someone measure how far your pistol comes back in recoil on average, take the furthest point and then add some distance for safety.  Then, once you get a full field of view, back off to that safe point (or even a little further on your first shot).  This will likely work better off the bench than from the field, but I will be practicing in 05 with a rifle scope from field positions with cartridges like the 6.5-284, 6-284, and 260 Remington.
I shot a rear grip specialty handgun in 338 Lapua Improved pushing 300 grain Sierra Match Kings with full loads with magnification over 24 power and never got touched (Ouch, wouldn't it hurt if you did though).  I just recently purchased a Burris 6-24 Black Diamond with Ballistic Mil-Dot Reticle to see how well it works from the bench out to 1k and from field rests in hunting scenarios.

I've had a 2 power shotgun scope on my .444 Marlin barrel for several years now. Since I had this barrel made 16 1/8 inches I put my stock on it for hunting but shoot it as a pistol mostly at the range. It does have a narrow field of view at arms reach which is nothing much to contend with off the sand bags. I have also become quite proficient at side draw and aim through practice. I feel quite confident taking reflex shots up to 50 yards this way. The key to anything is practice

444,
You are one of the few that I have heard of anyone using a shotgun scope in this way-thanks for sharing.

I went ahead and put on the 6-24 Burris 30mm Black Diamond Ballistic Mil-Dot Scope on my 284 Win XP-100 Tuesday afternoon.  Using my forever load of 59.0 gr. H-4831 with a 140 NBT (MV 2750) headed to the range.  Shot about 30 times without problems.  Need to see what I can do now from field positions with this set-up.  Have an extended 20 MOA picatinny base by Ken Farrel and using Burris's 30mm Ring with inserts (0's in both rings).
