VX-II 6-18AO Target scope for silhouette?
« on: November 20, 2004, 12:40:08 PM »
After adding a 1" butt plate to my 1712, it is now 2 oz. over hunter weight.   The butt plate has been drilled full of holes, aluminum rings installed,  sling mounts removed, etc..   However, I am looking to upgrade my scope and hopefully solve the weight issue at the same time.  The Leopold VX-II 6-18AOT target scope (15.8 oz) is 4 ounces lighter than the BSA that is on the gun now.    Would this be a good choice?   I see the 6.5-20 EFR used frequently, but it is, at 19 ounces, a good deal heavier than the VX II 6-18.   Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have used the 6-18 VXll for silhouette and been completely satisfied with them.  They have the same tracking system as all Leupolds and while they are not quite as sharp as the VXlll's I have never found it to be a problem even on overcast days.

If you still have a weight issue after changing scopes take the buttpad off and buy a cheap set of flip-flops and cut pads out of them and glue them on.  They will weigh less than one-half of what a regular 1" pad weighs.

3 out of 4 silhouette rifles have this scope on - works fine.

The other being a weaver T10. I'd buy the 6-18 over the T10 if I could do it again.

Iceman,

I believe that you may have gotten your Leupold models mixed up. You stated that the 6-18 was used on 3 out of 4 rifles. if you stated that about the Vari-Xlll 6.5 - 20 then I would not disagree.  The 6.5-20 is far and away the most popular scope on the silhouette line, both smallbore and highpower.

I have not seen anyone using a T-10 for years, although the older Weavers have by far the best tracking system of any of the scopes their optical clarity and adjustable objective leave something to be desired.  I did shoot a T-16 with great success for years and often wonder why I am not still using it.

i had 4 8.5 - 25 leupolds.  sold them for 6 - 24 sightrons.  much better tracking and clarity is okay at the lower magnifications.  i was shooting at 6x so things were fine.  have been shooting a T6 for about 8 months and am now shooting a T10 for smallbore.  with the T6 the clarity was fine and didn't have to move the objective.  lower magnification allows for both.  with the T10 clarity is still okay but have to move the objective.  a bit of an annoyance because it sometimes requires several revolutions.   am willing to deal with it because of the much superior tracking.  the T10 is 4oz lighter than the sightron.  comes in at a slim 18.25oz.  not too bad.

Should have said 3 out of 4 of my rifles - sorry for the confusion. I agree about the 6.5-20 's.

A local gun store had a few T10's they reduced in price a little and I bought one to see how it would be. For the price I'd suggest something else... like a leupold.

Thanks for the feedback.   One thing I didn't mention in my original post is that I am wanting to stay under-weight by a few ounces so I can experiment with my stock length -- it still seems too short.   The fixed 24x scopes are also light in weight, but I don't think my hold is sufficient, which led me towards the 6X-18X Leupold.
