Anybody change from the encore rifle to a handgun?
« on: November 20, 2004, 01:43:17 PM »
Just bought my first Encore today in 7-08 and I LOVE the way it feels.  Haven't shot it yet, but I am sure it won't let me down.

I got my first contender pistol about a month ago, and already picked up 4 barrels for it.  Because I have the encore now, I don't see the point in ever shooting it as a carbine.

Same goes for the encore as a pistol.

Do any of you guys switch back and forth from carbine to pistol if you have this kind of a set-up?

Are there any contender carbine barrels that aren't availible for the encore?

Are there any encore pistol barrels that are worth switching for??

Thanks in advance!
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Good one.  :D  I had 5 Frames for my Encores. Now I am down to 3, two for long guns and one for pistol. Just seems like the right thing to do.

Legal Issues?
« Reply #3 on: November 23, 2004, 01:02:08 AM »
Are there any legal issues with using a single Encore frame to swap back and forth between rifle and pistol as long as the barrel length requirements are met?

To answer the original question - yes, I switch back and forth. My Encore is a muzzleloader 209 x 50 for our early doe season, then it's a 223 turkey rifle for our turkey season and after that it's back to being a 44 Mag pistol for the rest of the year.

On the other hand, I keep one Contender set up as a rifle. I even bought it that way as a 30-30 carbine, just so I could take it to Canada for a bear hunt some years back and not face a hassle about taking a handgun. I keep the end label from the original box in my rifle case which shows the serial no., etc.

Warthog, there are those here that know the law much better then me but I do not think it is legle to change a frame you bought as a rifle to a hand gun. But you can change the handgun to rifle.
be safe and god bless

from my understanding yes ther is
you can have it regestered as a pistol an can change it back an forth following the barrel lenth issue, but if you have it regestered as a rifle an put the pistol grip on it...its a no..no, but given you will hear this alot that others do it but just to make things easyer for the ""just in case"" that might some time happen i would have all of them reg. as a pistol

I believe it depends upon where you reside and/or use it as to what specific legalities are involved.  We don't register them here in Arizona on the state or local level, now is there any federal registration requirement that we are missing?

yeah its fed. you will have to call up a person or store that has a ffl
its just like if you would go get a rifle take the stock off an choped the barrel or even  if you take a shotgun an make it smaller  turning a rifle in to a pistol is a fed. crime...the only way around it is to get a permit its called short barreled carbine its about 300$  for each gun basicly you are reregestering your rifle as a hand gun.... i have the book at work if it wasent so busy being black friday an rifle seasion up here in 4 days i would go look it up an put it on here but if you go to the umm i beleave its handgunhunt.com an ask around they will explane it better for you
a few years ago with the contender  tc went to court over it all an they put it on paper as a pistol can go any way an a rifle can only stay as a rifle or shotgun

Just to clear the record, my Encore was bought as a 44 pistol. I have never put a pistol barrel on my Contender Carbine frame.

Here in New York if you have a pistol, you have to have a permit for it!

It's ok to have an Encore pistol barrel and an Encore frame, but get a permit for it before you put the two together.

I have talked with the St. Lawrence county clerk about this issue and she said there is no problem with switching from rifle to pistol, etc.  Also, with each (pistol) caliber, you must register the barrel and the receiver.  So, you can have a bunch of pistol permit amendments, with different calibers and the serial numbers will all be the same!

The "Official" T/C line is that it IS legal.  I have it in writing should I ever be questioned.  But that is highly doubtable I ever will.  Where I live I will be left alone unless I do something stupid and the boys in blue need to stretch something out on me.  T/C actually went to court and one a verdict on the Contender and this issue.  While not specifically, stated the Encore and G2, being almost the same exact thing, IMOP and apparently in the minds of T/C are also covered.  But thats me.  Its now up to you to decide.

Texas is a wonderful country!

I bought both my contender and encore at a gun show.  No paperwork at all!

The best part is I can reconfigure any way I like and don't have to answer to ANYONE (except the wife...but that a sore spot)

The only state I have heard this is a problem in, is (drumroll please)................... you guessed it........... The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. I've always understood that the Federal regulations dont make the distinction but some states have made it an issue. After all the TCs were DESIGNED for this specific purpose and TC has been to the supreme court on the issue. The reality is, if you are in a situation where it becomes an issue you are probably already in deep do-do.

Note: I just re-read the court ruling and it is a little vague in regards to a pistol to rifle conversion. The case that came to the court as I understand it was pertaining to a rifle to pistol conversion and whether having the "parts" to possibly assemble a short barreled rifle constituted the posession of such a rifle. In the decision it recognized the BATF stance that if frames for both were present it did not constitute a violation.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Hardertr,

Just so you don't violate federal law and put a barrel shorter than 16" on a frame that has a rifle buttstock attached, thereby making it a sawed off rifle, a federal offense.

On the other hand, it sure would be handy to carry a 10" 44 mag with a rilfe stock and a short eye relief scope, if that were legal.

"Steelbanger Harder"....I guess it has a nice ring to it.  I'm gonna name my first born after YOU!  :)

You probably just saved my a$$ by your last post!  I was thinking a 14" 223 with a scope and the stock would make a VERY nice rabbit gun.  I never would have thought about making sure it was taken apart before headed back to the house.

Thanks for the heads up....I owe you one!

I could somewhat understand the reasoning of this law for guns with multi shot capabilities but it doesn't make a lot of sense for a single shot. Even one of the Justices eluded to that fact. Too bad there isn't an exception.
