Nice picture and a really nice deer.
I swear you guys are corrupting me more all the time. Going to have to put the rifle in a vault away from home to keep me from selling it. :)  :D

Taking a deer with a pistol is a major thrill. It sure makes stalking and dragging easier with your hands free. I took my first animal with a pistol when I was 21 (30 years ago) and I have been hooked since.

Could you tell us a little bit about how your load and bullet performed?  Did the bullet pass completely through?  Did it mushroom?  Was there a large entry/exit wound and wound channel ect?  I'm curious about how .45 varying bullets perform as I'm thinking about using one for next year's season in a T/C pistol.  Thanks!

The bullet hit him in the neck just in front of the shoulder. He hit the ground like a rock. I gave him to a friend who is going to butcher him today and give me an autopsy report on the bullets performance. That 230 grain Gold Dot has a massive hollowpoint and driven at 1150 fps it did not exit.

Big deer!

Nice Job Redhawk!

He certainly looks like a big bodied deer.  What did he dress out at?  I see you are shooting over iron sights.  How far was the shot?  I don't trust my eyes anymore, and have moved to red dots and scopes on mine.  So much more rewarding getting one with a pistol!

That 230 grain Gold Dot tore a hole through his neck almost the size of a half dollar. It stopped just under the skin on the far side. It expanded fully and shed some of its petals but retained most of its weight. He absorbed the full energy of the load just below his spine. No wonder he dropped like a rock.

He went about 180 dressesd. He was 40' away angling slightly toward me. I know what you mean about the eyes. My sights look like a gob of fuzz anymore. Scopes are so bulky I just hate to deal with them but my choices are getting limited with my eyes going bad.

Hi Redhawk,

I've found the red dot sights work great.  They are fairly small. They don't add much weight to the gun.  They allow you to keep both eyes open for the shot.  They hold up fine to recoil (at least up to my SRH in .480).  Currently I have a 2X scope on the SRH, but I think I will be going back to the red dot.  I like being able to keep both eyes open, and the scope on a close shot was difficult due to the reduced field of view.

Good job on the deer!  He's a nice one.
