Hi, this is my first post.

I'm wanting to get in to Cowboy Action Shooting.  This will be my first Cowboy Action gun.  I've got lots and lots of other firearms.    The Birds Head grip seems the most comfortable in my hands.  How does that perform in events?  Also, what would be a good barrel length?  I think I'm going to get the Ruger.

Thanks

Howdy WF,
Welcome to the camp fire.  Here is a great place to check before ploping down your hard earned $$ for wheelguns (or any guns for that matter.)
http://www.curtrich.com/cowboyphotos.html  The good Capt and I both are from the Republic's first Capital and he knows from what he speaks.

One of the best ways is to attend a shoot and see what the pards are using.  Most times they will almost "force" you to shoot with them or at least try out all the guns that everyone seems to bring along.  Side by side comparisions are a very good way to see what is best for you.

Now so thoughts about your gun:  Do you have a caliber in mind?  Are you needing a light recoiling gun?  Are you going to do your own reloading or go "store-bought"?  38 Sp are cheaper to buy than 45 Colts.  Do the Rugers seem to fit your hands?  Notice you like the BH grips.  Ruger is in process of bringing out smaller framed guns  probably will be a year or longer but it's in the works.  Rugers are built like tanks but weigh more so there is always a good vs. bad part to your decisions.

Get back to us and we'll work on your questions.

Hey WoodenFrog and welcome!  I shoot Ruger Birdheads in .45 lc with 4 4/8" barrels.  They do just fine in comp for me but I find that a lot of people don't like them once they actually shoot them.  If I were you I would see if you could find one to shoot before buying them.

Good luck and have fun!

I gotta agree that ya need to try before ya buy and at a shoot, that should be pretty easy to do.  I don't shoot Birdshead grips but I do have Colts Clones and Rugers and I'd be tickeled if you tried them out, most other Cowboys like to show off their equipment and feel the same way.  Grab yourself a box of 45's or 38's and just show up and let someone know your intrested.  Mother Nature will take care of the rest.
