45-70 Tough on Rings
« on: November 21, 2004, 12:58:15 PM »
  I have only put a hundred or so  rounds through my 45-70 Encore pistol and I snapped the cross bolt on the rear ring last time out shooting it!     I'll admit its got a bit of recoil but, I found out  to buy really good rings now! The ones I had on hand were aluminum Millets I think but, I quickly orderd a couple of set of steel Leopold rings for Weaver bases.
I have a 2pwr Burris scope on top and plan on taking a nice buck ( I hope) in a couple of weeks.  Has anyone else had a similar experiance with rings, bases, scopes ect ??
Also if you a good load please post
  Thanks

Aluminum rings work great on heavily-recoiling pistols if they are correctly installed - and if you use three of them.  SSK used the aluminum Bushnell rings on Weaver-type bases for many many years on .45-70s and heavier recoiling XPs without problems.  I used them too, on .35 Remingtons, 10" .45LCs and .45-70s without problems.  Unfortunately, Bushnell stopped makng them, now SSK uses the aluminum Leupold etc. Rifleman rings.  They are not the quality of the Bushnells, but using 3 or 4 will solve the problem.

Note that the rings must be correctly installed.  They must be pushed forward as they are tightened so the cross bolts bear against the mount crosscut - each ring.  Tighten firmly and use a strip of 400-grit paper between the ring and scope.  Do it this way and your problems are over.   8)

For deer loads, try any 300 HP ahead of AA2015.  Work up and do not exceed listed maximums for weak .45-70s.  This powder works very well for me in both accuracy and velocity, 14" and 16" tubes.

Thanks for the reply Lonestar,  The Leopold rings I purchased have a steel block that fits into the cross bolt slot on the base and dual torxhead bolts that lock the ring onto the base.  Looks to be alot stonger system.     I went out and fired about 20rds and everything stayed tight.
  I'll give the 2015 powder a chance soon as I have been useing AA 5744 and Reloader7 w/ 300 & 405 gr bullets sofar.
