I am currently entertaining the idea of picking up a Savage 12bv in 22-250. How is this caliber for pelts? What is the max range for a clean kill on coyotes? This gun would mostly be used on coyotes. My local dealer is asking $450 new - no scope, and without the accutrigger.

Is this a good deal?

This Caliber Kills Like A Bolt Of Lightning. You will get alot of opinions on Bullet types. Got to see a Mag review, four to five diff rifles, all except the Savage did poorly with the 55gr bullet weight due to 1-10 rate of twist verse the 1-12 rate for the Savage.

I personally use Hornadys hide bullet, the #2267 fmj-bt with great sucess.
These guy's are starting to wear me down though with good reports coming in on the lighter, fragile bullets causing instant kills with no exit wounds. Might try this but would put it off till next spring so as to allow plenty of time for load work-up & accuracy testing.
On the other hand, it may be a good time to try a .204

That may be a little high. I picked up a new Savage Model 14 with a surprisingly nice wood stock for $300. I mounted a Bushnell 3200 scope that was $159. It literally took me 6 shots to dial it in after bore-sighting. Max effective range on this round is going to be close to 300 yards, assuming the shooter and rifle can put it on the money. I would never recommend FMJ bullets, at 250 velocities, they will go right through, like an icepick. I've personally seen a coyote run off after he was hit dead center with a FMJ out of a 220 Swift. We never found it. If you hit bone with a Vmax type bullet it's likely going to blow up. I think the better bullet choice for coyotes is a 50 or 55 gr soft point, with a good HP coming in second. I like the 50/55 gr bullets Speer puts out.

you can get a remington adl synthetic with 24" barrel in that caliber that will give you excellent accuracy off a set of cross sticks as your rest. it will cost you a little less than the SSSssssss....... :shock: Ssssssssssssssaaaaa........ :eek: and the trigger will be tuneable per the instructions at www.centerfirecentral.com. The Remington will have a hammer-forged barrel which will be somewhat more tolerant of the pressures and heat from that cartridge. How much exactly I can't quantify, but it should last longer. Some of the SSsssssssaaaa.....

barrels are also very rough and get copper fouled very easily. Button rifling is not always a means to a smooth barrel. See some of what they say about them on www.long-range.com -- both good and bad.

I load bl-c(2), 33.5 gr's of it, with hornady 60 gr' spire points for my buddy's .22-250 Rem' adl syn' and it puts bullets on top of each other at his neighbors '92-yard' range. It's accurate!

The Savage Model 12BVSS, with AccuTrigger, has a MSRP of $675.00 but I have seen them going for as little as $549.95 at Wal-Mart. My son bought this rifle, except in a left hand version and in .223 Rem., and the first three sight-in shots went into a group that measured 0.313. It has only gotten better with load work since then. safetysheriff reports that the barrels are also very rough and get copper fouled very easily which no one that I know that owns a newer Savage is reporting this condition. Neither my son nor I have experienced this condition. If you want excellent out of the box accuracy, get the Savage. If you want a pretty rifle that you can buy lots and lots of after market parts for so it will shoot as well as the Savage then something else(see Graybeard I didnt mention your favorite rifle company). Hi i have a 22 250 in a ADL Remington and i love it i have a 223 too i would look at a Remington you can get one for around 380.00 or so my friend has a Savage in a model 11 in a 22 250 and it is a good shooter do you think you will need a heavy barrel gun good luck with your pick let us know what you get VM

You did good Lawdog...........now if we can get safetysherrif to give a Savage a try.....maybe he would have a different opinion......but first we need to get him to say the word.

Not a thing wrong with the Savage, they are great entry level guns for hunters on a budget. You can spend a lot more and get a lot less for sure. The Acuratrigger is sure to force the major manufactures to have a look at those sorry triggers they've been putting out for years and if nothing else good comes from Savage we should give them credit for a bold step with the trigger.

I'm here to tell you....the Savage I have is sure enough a shooter.

I think that I am going to hold off untill after Christmas.

There is just too much going on with the holidays to give me the time I need.

The 22-250 at my local dealer is still there, same price - but I can get a scoped Savage from Dicks for $50 more. Hmmm........

The 223 option seems real nice, but so does the list of others...

IM SO CONFUSED!!!

The noise report from the rifle is a concern, as this is a populated area that I want to hunt coyotes in.

i like savage rifles, and 22-250 cartriges!
i have a cooper rifle in 22-250AI that shoots 40gr nosler balistic tips at 4200fps into 3/8inch groups. never shot a coyote with it but i have shot a few groundhogs over 500yds. and it knocks the crap out of them!
i also have a savage that is the most accurate (consistant!!!) rifle i own. its in .222rem magAI. when i go to the range, i hang two bull,s in my first set, the first shot from a cold oiled barrel, goes into the first bull, it does not get shot untill the next trip to the range. i have many 1/2inch groups shot this way! after the barrel is fouled it shoots 1/4inch groupes!!!
i own three cooper rifles that dont shoot like that!
my savage is ugly on the outside, but pretty where it counts! on the target! the savage might be the best for the money! its all go no show!
well it,s not that ugly!

you can also load the 22-250 down to .223 velosity, with out giving up accuracy, down to 3500fps i should think.

Glanceblamm, Why would you say that the Remington only had a 1-10 twist rate? All you have to do is go visit their web site and see that they are either 12" or 14":
(I couldn't duplicate their table but you should be able to line up the figures with the correct column headings)

The said test involved at least five diff rifles. I was greatly dismayed because of the poor preformance of all (except Savage) when the 55gr bullets were tested. The Savage had a 1 in 12 rate while all of the others were listed as 1 in 10. I dont rightly recall if Remington was listed (you would think so) but if so, it could have been a typo.

Yours is good news. I think that the lighter bullets will shoot well enough but the best ballistic uniformity begins with the 53 to 55gr.

I'm wanting to put together a very accurate varmint rifle and am trying to gather some helpful data. I'm down to two choices;
1.) a .22-250 barrel (bull or tapered in SS) for my SS Encore
2.) a Savage Model 12 Varminter Low Profile with AccuTrigger

I originally wanted to continue with my collectin of Ruger firearms ( KM77VT MKII ) but have heard complaints regarding the quality of the Ruger action in their Varmint rifle.

The cheapest route would be for me to just pick up a TC Barrel for my Encore but I haven't heard anything regarding how accurate they are. I need to start working on the Coyote population on our hunting lease here in Central Fla.

Any comments from anyone

The 22-250 is a good choice for dog hunting, but it is hard to beat the accuracy of the 204 ruger. It IS the most accurate small bore round. The best part about it is that you will not wear down your barell life because it has a low powder charge, but with its superior case design and lighter bullet, it achieves unbelievable velocities. The savages shoot nice in this round, but are probably the ugliest guns to look at. The rugers also shoot nice, but with the horrible trigger that they come with, you will lose some accuracy that way, unless you are accustomed to shooting a 6 pound trigger. I love my remington because I think they shoot the best, look the best (not that the dogs care), and have very workable triggers. I average under .25 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yds. The biggest downfall is on really windy days, you will get a little wind drift, but that is common with many of the 22 cal rifles as well. If ya'll haven't tried em, find a buddy who has one and give it a whirl. They reign supreme!

Well, I finally decided to go with the new Savage model 12 low profile in .22-250. Got it Tue. My only surprise was that it doesn't have a floor plate in it where you can drop the cartridges out without having to chamber each round. I'm used to my Rem 700BDL. I ordered a Leupold 6.5 x 20 50mm varminter reticle scope today and should have it by Monday. Had to get the scope in matte black finish. I guess it won't look to bad on the SS barrel. I would have liked to gone with the Encore Bull barrel but couldn't find comments anywhere regarding accuracy out of them.

How should I sight this in (how high at 100yds) ?

Is it really necessary to go through an elaborate 'break-in' process? If so, what seems to work for everyone? I took it to our range Thur night and fired 13 rounds through it, cleaning with Butch's Bore Cleaner after each round. I was told I should do this for the first 15 rounds then after each group of 3-5 rounds until I pushed 50 rounds through it. This seems like a lot. Do I NOT worry about groupings until I've fired all of these rounds through it? :oops:

they have that model with the acutrigger an a 4-12 scope a simmions but a good start but most of all the gun is 500 an it gos on sale for 450 thats a 50 more but u get the acutrigger an u could keep the rings an mount an sell the scope for 50$ they have it in 22-250 or 223

Send it to me. I'll do the barrel break-in for ya :grin: ! Sounds like a great set-up. I've been really yearning for one chambered in .204. Sorry, can't really help with a procedure for break-in. Please, keep us posted on how well it shoots when you do start shooting for groups.

Grunthunter: My savage 22-250 shoots dead on at 100 and 200 the same with nice fast 40gr hand loads. At 4400fps it just works out that way if the scope is about 1.75 inches higher than the barrel. Larry

With a 55 grain 22-250, You should sight in at 200 yards where you will be dead on, 0.9 high at 100, 5" low at 300 and 15.4 low at 400 yards.

Just sighted in my new Savage in 22-250. Started life as a WallMart 243 package rifle for $329.00, I put a custom 26 inch 1 in 17 twist sporter weight 22-250 barrel on and bedded the front inch of the plastic stock to keep it from being so flexi on the bags. It is a Coyote rifle so I need it light to carry, (I am old). 40gr Barnes VLC's over 39.5 gr of AA2520 does about 4400fps. 100 yard and 200 yards are held dead on at zero, (just works out that way I guess). This is a five shot 200 yard target, the coin is a penny. Larry
