Who's got the best accuracy in an apple-to-apple comparison?  Bullberry, Old Virgin Valley, Van Horn, etc... How does that compare to FoxRidge?

How is that for a debate!

Hi guys,

I am in the process of ordering a custom Encore rifle barrel.  I am doing some checking on best value/accuracy and will be posting the results.

I read a posting earlier that a Van Horn barrel was beating the Bullberries at the range.  Don't recall what caliber and or if handgun/rifle but it may/may not be an isolated data.  Anyway I spoke to Van Horn, they seem to be a smaller shop with more quality control.  He claimed their barrels to be more accurate than Bullberry and bullberry is getting 2-3" grouping with their magnum calibers (what a surprise).  He is sending me their brochure since their web site is not complete.  Price on SS bull rifle barrel was $360 with 4 weeks delivery time.

Anyone has ordered the Van Horn or Fox Ridge bull barrels?

Of the ones I currently own my VVCG 6mm 30-30 AI is the most accurate of my TC barrels. I have a BB in .221 that is right behind it. Don't have any barrels from the other custom houses to compare.

I have a Van Horn, Virgin Valley and Bullberry barrels that I have had rechambered by OTT and there was a world of difference in accuracy after rechambering.  All my new barrels are OTT.  For accuracy my OTT barrels are so accurate they have pet nicknames.  221 wonder barrel,  22lr awesome barrel and last but not least 7tcu amazing barrel.  8)

I shoot 2 encore barrels , a .223 and a 22 hornet . Each is a factory barrel and with my handloads they Average 5/8 inch 5 shot 100 yard groups , I have just started shooting from the bench and have not mastered the tecnique and should close up the groups with a little more practice .
My 22 hornet shot its best 5 shot group last weekend at .283

What Barrel Maker????
« Reply #8 on: November 23, 2004, 06:20:34 PM »
Hobbyist.  I have 15 barrels in calibers from 22 LR to 308s.  They are all accurate.  My 22 LR is a 16" Bull barrel from the Custom Shop (Fox Ridge) and it is a winner.  I have a Custom shop 243 SS 26" Heavy barrel and it is deadly as well as it's look alike in 7mm TCU.

I shoot with a buddy that has two Bullberry barrels.  I would hate to live on the difference in accuracy in all the barrels.

However, my most recent purchase was a Van Horn barrel in 7mm BR that is 18.5" long with a muzzle brake out to 20".  Right out of the box I was amazed at the accuracy.  Yesterday, I shot at the Rifle Silhouette range.  Chickens = 220 yards: Pigs =330 yards and Turkeys = 418 yards.  Rams are at 547 yards.  I only had 30 rounds of ammo left and I started on the Chickens, then Pigs and then Turkeys.  With my last round of ammo, I was on my last turkey for 30 hits.  30 hits out of 30 hits with wind and etc. is a great day in my book.

My future barrels will be Van Horns.  The turn around time was 4 weeks instead of several months and the quality of work is top of the line.

I let all my shooting buddies experience the Van Horn barrel.  I just carry a towel to wipe the drool drops off it.

Harold, that's great information.  It is for contributors like you that this forum is so informative.  Thanks.

Guys, I spoke to Steve at VVCC yesterday inquiring about the hangers for non Bullberry barrels to be used with Bullberry wood (since I have one).  He is still selling them and is charging $20 (rifle), and $18 (handgun).  He can be reached at vvcguns@infowest.com and will call you if you leave a number.

Stay tuned for additional info.

Check this out just for fun. I guess the question is always going to go back to how accurate do you really need it? For deer hunting at 100 yards, is a .75 group going to be better than a 1-1/2 group?  Or will that extra accuracy be better applied for 200 yard target shooting?

My $100 t/c .22 match barrel in 10" will outshoot my $250 Bullberry 14" match.  Most of my TC barrels will shoot under an inch at 100.  If they shot larger groups, they were traded, sold, or shipped back to TC.

I know it's not a pistol, but I just fired this group today.  Used an OTT barrel in 416 Rem Mag.  I call it the Terminator.  I also have an SSK barrel in 309 JDJ that will print sub 1" groups if I do my part.  Also, a pic of the rifle (OTT barrel).

Thanks for sharing.

Guys,

I was looking at the OTT web site.  He lists encore barrels and Carbine barrels for encore.  There is no mention of barrel lengths.  Is he custom making every barrel? What is he considering standard vs. carbine length?  I send him an email but haven't heard back from him yet.

Can anyone help?

Most of the Custom Barrel makers will make a barrel any length you want up to about 27" and then longer.

Harold, My fault for not being more specific!

He lists two different prices for Standard (What length?) vs Carbine (custom length?) barrels.  I am trying to understand what I will get for each price.

Hobbyist, I built the stock.  It's one of my ugly ones, but I wasn't sure how it would stand up to the recoil.  Chunky, too.  After working with the maple (my only maple stock), I learned I prefer working with fancy walnut.  It's much easier to deal with.  When you hit it with a file, something comes off of it...maple isn't as friendly!

I know Van Horn makes his own barrels. Doesn't use anyones blanks. He has been around quite a while. I remember him at gun shows in Tucson in the early 80's.

4x4,

That's a good looking stock.  You need something substantial to hold on to when shooting that canon. :)

How did you make the finger grooves?  I am thinking about adding finger grooves to my T/C stock.

I have a set of drum sanders of different sizes.  I think it was the 3/4" diameter one I used.  Just chucked it in my drill press, put on a respirator and made some serious dust!

I have just 2 custom contender barrels.
1 is a 14 inch 209x50 s.s bullberry
2 is a 14 inch 375 jdj in ssk krome
of the 2 the 375jdj barrel was the fastest getting to me and it shoots way better then I can.
the 209x50 is not a track driver but this may be due the nature of a M.L. barrel. it is very hard to keep everything consistent  in the field
they both are very well made and are accurate enough for hunting with the edge going to the 375 jdj

Van Horn 18.5" barrel in 7mm BR.

I fired this barrel again yesterday at 420 yards at Silhouette Chickens.  It was sighted so that I could aim at the head of the chickens and it would hit dead center on the target.  I had two buddies spotting through high power scopes.  I ran the 10 chickens without a miss and both spotters declared that every shot was within 2.5 to 3" in the center of the chicken.  After that I ran 9 out of 10 Rams at 547 yards.  A tail wind lifted the high shot over the back of the one Ram.  At least that is my story and I'm sticking with it.

I'm considering another barrel.  It will definitely be a Van Horn.
