clays powder for 45acp loads?

wantingto use clays powder  under 200 & 180 grain  hard cast lead bullets ? anyone used  this,, iam figuring around 5grains?  any help here?
ive been using 231 , and have used unigue  but my gun seems to crud up after 200+ rounds

Hogdon`s web page lists some loads may want to check there.
5.0 is over max for both the 185 and 200 gr check, for proper load data check in a reloading manual or there web site.  Load safe, shoot safe.

I've been useing Clays for years. My load, in my Colt is 4 gr. under a 200 gr. swc.. It's clean burning, and not a lot of re-coil for target shooting. :D

Clays is an excellent powder, but it's not cleaner burning than 231. Try switching to Winchester WLP primers. They're a little hotter and they tend to keep things cleaner longer.

I use 4.3 grs of clays with a 200 gr Leadheads bullet and get 1 inch groups from my Springfield. 5 grs in a larger bullet weight would be too much and may cause some damage to you and your gun. Ask me, I done it once. Steve 48

Clays is a fast powder and you need to be careful.  I like it because it produces a lower felt recoil.   I'm not near my data now and will not trust to memory but I load a 200 SWCL to 875fps.  I have had good luck with FED LP primers.

Titegroup

I used Clays for awhile in competition, but eventually ended up with Titegroup as my 45acp powder after going through Clays, W231, and WST.  Liked Clays, but seemed to have a little more recoil than the Titegroup.  If I remeber correctly, Clays produces pretty high pressure rounds (but check the Hodgdon site to make sure).
