SSK Barrel value?
« on: November 23, 2004, 06:22:18 AM »
I have a 14" stainless Contender barrel in .223 from SSK that I'm toying with the idea of parting with. I know it ran $380 new but I have no idea how they hold their value.  What is one ( lightly used and 98%) worth on the private market these days.

p.s. this is not a FS add, I just need some input to decide my path.

I don`t think that there is any way your going to get close to 98% of the new price. Most people would sooner get a new T/C barrel for 1/2 that price. The only thing you can do is figure out what it`s worth to you and see if it`s worth that or more to someone else. I personally would pay no more than 50% of new price for a SSK barrel unless it was in a cal. that I wanted bad and I could try yhe barrel befor I bought it. If it`s a real shooter and you can find the right person you might get 75 to 80% of new price. It just depends on how bad someone wants it.

I believe he meant that the condition of the barrel was 98%,  100%  being new condition.

I agree with Catfish.....
If a person had an SSK barrel in one of their custom chamberings, where you couldn't get it from T/C or Foxridge, then I think they hold their value a bit better.  But, a standard chambering that you can pick up a new T/C or Foxridge barrel for almost half the new price of a SSK barrel, I think it's going to be hard to get close to your investment back out of it.  Unless you find a person who it looking for just what you got, and especially if they have a chance to fire it and KNOW it is capable of say 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

I had a used 6.5 JDJ barrel set-up that I sold, and it was fairly easy to sell.  I believe because it was in a popular custom chambering & I priced it very reasonable.  I believe you can get just a lil' more then regular used barrel price for yours.

I feel the same goes for custom guns, if you can't find someone looking for exactly what you've put together, you'll get maybe a bit more then used gun price for it, maybe.  I wish you luck!

I'm not a custom barrel dude really, but I would guess (based on seeing other ads) that you could get about $250 for it.  That's about a 100 or so more than a comparable factory barrel, which doesn't seem too out of line for your barrel.  Any "extras" (like a rib or TSOB scope mount) would probably help a little.

Pricing on used SSK barrels pretty much has nothing to do with your original cost in it. It is rather based on current pricing and replacement costs. If you bought it so long ago original cost was $200 that wouldn't mean it would sell for that or less today as the current pricing is far higher.

But as stated the fact it is in a common caliber available from TC and every other maker is working against you big time. If it were in one of the JDJ or Whisper chamberings you might in fact get your money back on it. But in .223? Not gonna happen.

I suspect you'll be lucky to get $250-275 from it at least here at GBO with informed buyers. But put it on E-bay and the idiots might pay you $500. Get a couple of folks in a bidding war over something there and they often go for far more than fair market value.

Thanks to all that responed . I was figuring $250-$300 would be good. ( And I agree Ebay might do better.)  Still not sure I'm selling it, but this aids in the decision process.

Remember Eds Contenders has used SSK barrels some with T'SOB mounts at very reasonable prices.  I picked up my SSK Khrome 375JDJ with a T'SOB full vent rib and Mag Na Ported and dies for $350.
But like GB said there are some real morons on Ebay.

I agree with GB.  Ebay is the place to be as a seller, not a buyer.  Sold my SSK 300 Whisper on ebay.
