Lik2hunt gets a new Handi!!
« on: November 23, 2004, 06:51:11 AM »
Picked up a New on-the-shelf 7x64 Brenneke yesterday after having it on lay-away for two weeks. The gun had originally been marked down $20 and then two weeks ago was part of a store-wide 10% off sale. Had my eye on this one for about a year and with the refund check which came from H&R/Marlin for my Ultra 25-06 w/ extra .223 bull barrel I was able to get this little jewel and have money left. Sad part is the check didn't actually arrive until Saturday, opening day here in OK. Good thing I picked up one of those Vanguards Wal-Mart put on sale a while back or I would have been up a creek. The Brenneke is an original 2000 manufacture date gun with the serial # beginning with NP. Came with all original paperwork in the original white box, standard Handi wood with schnable foreend and sling swivels. Locks up and opens like dream and feels better in my hands than any other Handi I've handled. Plan on a Swift Premium 2-7x40 on top of it after a good cleaning. The store I picked it up from also carried three factory ammos for it too! The Norma, Rem. Core-Lokts, and the one I decided on, the Federal Premium loaded with a 160 grain Nosler Partition. Can't wait to give a try and perhaps will get it ready to go before our season ends here on Dec.5, hope so. If not, then I'll have to bloody it on a hog I guess.
A word about H&R......they did refund the original purchase price of the Ultra 25-06 and the $82 cost of the extra barrel. So I recooped all I had in te gun minus the S&H charges for the extra barrel. Standup effort by them to keep a customer happy in my books.

Yeah...we have some handi haulics on here. We just like to tinker with um...Most get a handi that is a shooter right from the get go. Good trigger and etc. Others need some tinkering to get um to shoot... At the other end of the spectrum are the turds....some times ya get one...they really stink and tick ya off too but ya just keep trying.... there is that goal of makeing a silk purse out of a sows ear that attracts some of us. It's lie that 308 barrel you had that wouldn't shoot....someone jumped right in there and asked how much ya wanted for it....see what I mean??!! Happy Shooting! :D

FWIW, handis that shoot good are the norm, those that don't are the exception. I have 8 of em, shot 7 of em and all 7 shoot good to great, that is 2" or less at 100yds, with the first 2 rounds touching or real close and the most I've done to any of em was polish the bore and chamber and do a 1 hour trigger job. If I had one like your .308, I think I would have sent it to NEF before I got rid of it, bad ones do exist, but too many here have good shooters to dismiss it totally.

Glad to hear they took care of you so well, although I must admit I am not really suprised.

When I bought my UV 223 I didn't noticetill I got home with it that the forend and buttstock didn't really match (both laminated, just colors were quite a bit off) so I placed a call to customer service. The guy told me it really wasn't their fault and I agreed with him.  He finally asked me to send him some pictures and he'd do what he could.

End result?  I now have matching stocks.  In my opinion, it should have been that way from the start, and I shouldn't have accepted the rifle, but I did.  Even so, they made it right.  I did send back the original forend by the way.

I've had other cases where they did me right as well.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Yep....case in point....Ultra 25-06......couldn't take it anymore and when they offered to buy it back, I jumped on it. If you read the post about it tho you'll see it was after much frustrations and trips back to the factory.

marv....you guessed it....OKC it was!

In the FWIW department....I haven't posted about this yet but it seems like as good a time as any now. I bought three used barrels off this forum a while back and of the three I wound up keeping a 30-30 barrel. It wouldn't lock up tight to the Ultra receiver so I never shot it from it. With the rifle season arriving here and after much research and advice from others here and elsewhere, I decided to remove my 50 cal BP barrel form My Huntsman and replace it with the 30-30 for season. Put all the Huntsman parts back on including the foreend minus the ramrod and got some Win 170 grain Powerpoints and off to the range I went. Without floating the barrel or any other accuracy mods I was able to put three in a 1" circle at 50 yards. This was with a cheap fixed power Bushnell that I don't have a lot of confidence in either but it's all I have for it right now. Also was shooting from the elbow-rested-on-the-pickup-hood position so I was off in my aiming each shot from the last too. I'm happy with that, and even with all the problems I was having with the Ultra it was shooting 2" groups consistently. I'd have sent that 223/.308 combo back a few times too I think. Just MHO  :D

Glad ya got that .25-06 situations squared away and came out happy.

I'm surprised that ya found some different factory ammo for the brenneke, I did a search for it at one time and found only one load available, so I didn't buy the barrel that was available at the time. Ballistics for it looks real favorable for a deer/elk round.

Good luck with the new rifle and be safe!

The Brenneke is a great round...it will do anything the 280 will do and do it  in a shorter barrel..and with the Nosler Partions...well...if you ever get to draw a bead on an elk...look out...

Like2hunt...I'll bring my chronograph down in Febuary when we go hog hunting.....I think you'll be very pleased with the results...

I'm happy everything finally worked out so well for you lik2hunt. But then again, you deserved it for all your patience and persistence. So Am I to take it that you want to sell your 30-30 barrel now ( :-D )?

Back to reality, good luck the rest of the season....<><....

Liketohunt I read your posts on the 25-06 I true liked how H&r treated you ...
you buy a 200 dollar gun....
send it back numuous times demanding 1000 dollar acuracy from
it I bet H&R has a name for you

Uh huh

If you will re-read that post you'll see that accuracy was NEVER an issue but it was safety and efficiency that was the problem. I also just posted in this thread about it's accuracy.....as far as H&R having a name for me, yes they do...."satisfied and compensated customer" who just bought another one of their guns.  :D
Oh and BTW, an Ultra Hunter 25-06 is not a $200 gun.

Ha,Ha,Ha,  My thoughts exactly AO. I could probably send this barrel back, but I knew it was cheap when I bought it. And as a general rule you get what you pay for, am I right ?

Lik2hunt, I think you did great!!! I never remember you demanding out of the box bench rest accuracy, just a reasonably safe and functional gun. You did good and did not quit, They did good and stood by their product and their warrantey. All was well in the world, they way life should be. I for one salute both you and H&R!!!!!!    SALUTE!!....<><....

:D  :yeah: like2hunt, the 7x64 Brenneke was the caliber I was originally looking for when I bought my 7-08Rem Handi.......Glad to hear that there are a few out there......
Enjoy.....

I also appreciated your tale of the 25-06.....I'm glad to  that the company will stick by us to the end.....I had to send my 7-08 back....after 20 factory Remington rounds my barrel lockup developed a GAP to the receiver, it never opened  on firing,  but wiggled so bad, it wouldn;t stay on the paper of a 3x5 FOOT target frame. They replaced the barrel, and included a copy of the  test target.....and shoots well without a problem....though I have yet to seriously work up loads for it.....

offhand35, a name out of the past!! Where have you been? Any hunting or shooting stories to fill us in with that would explain your percieved absence? It's great to see your name up on the board again...I understand lik2hunt may know where there another 7x64 for a good guy like you if you are still looking for one (hope I didn't speak to soon, perhaps they are all gone by now)....<><....

lik2hunt,

If that Norma ammo was reasonably priced, you should pick it up, if for nothing else than the brass.  That's assuming you reload, of course.  Norma brass is one of the best, if not the best.

Reloading is going to be my next year's diligent pursuit.....to get the equipment and bullets, powders, etc. to become proficient at it. Have the 30-30 Handi barrel and the Brenneke to work on now and plan to get a 45-70 in the near future. So reloading is the way to go on all these calibers and the 30-30 will be fun to work on with some Partiton and BT bullets. Have a press already and some bullets etc. Just need to quit thinking of new guns every time I get some extra money    and concentrate on scales, dies, etc.
