I called the gun shop and put a stainless steel 223 Handi rifle on layway. I saw it at a gun shop on my way home from hunting last week. They had a good supply of Handi rifles. I had a 223 until about 6 months ago in the regular blued handi rifle. That one was stolen from me and I doubt it will ever be recovered. It was a good shooter with 12 to 3/4 inch groups. To the dismay of some I intend to use it for varmits and deer. I want a rifle that I can head shoot deer out to 150 yards or so. I have done it with an over and under 222/20 Ga savage and it works as long as your shot will be a head shot or a clean miss. I will use either the 60 grain nosler partition, the 55 grain trophy bonded bear claw or the Barnes X bullet. All are intended for use on deer and pronhorns according to thier manufactures. If I have any trouble with deer hunting with it, I will get a 243 barrel for it. I have a bad shoulder that the recoil of bigger rifles really tears up.

I know this subject has been worn out, but with good judgement & proper shot placement, the .223 can be a fine deer cartridge.
My son took his first 2 deer with an SB2 .223 bull bbl, both were heart shots & they both ran about 30 yds. Anyone who hunts knows proper shot placement is the key, whether you're shooting a 22 or a .338 or anything in between. Practice,Practice,Practice, shoot what you have confidence in.

You may have trouble stabilizing the 60 gr bullets. I tried some 63 gr that went all over the place. However, I did get some 2" groups with IMI 62 gr. I think it's Sierra that makes a 63 gr that is built for a 1 in 12" twist, like the Handi has. I haven't actually shot any, so I don't know how they shoot.

Paul, My son's .223 shoots the Sierra 63 gr. semi-point soft-nose bullets really,really good. That's what he shot both his deer with. I shot a nice buck with the same load. The boy was only 11 and the buck was a little out of his comfortable shooting range, ( 175 yds, measured with a lazer rangfinder) I did'nt have my rifle and the buck was too nice to pass up.
I shot him once, he took off, I quickly reloaded and shot again. He ran about 75 yds and went down. Both shots were right on, about 2 inches apart, and both were pass-throughs with quarter size exits. IMO they are a good bullet.

That's good to know.

I have actually been so busy having fun with my .45/70, I haven't worked much with the .223 lately. However, I haven't gotten very good results with any of my handloads in .223. Win white box 45 gr varminters shoot pretty decent, but not handloads so far.

I have the 45-70 as well. Its a shooter forn sure. I will try the Sierra semi pointed bullet when I get the 223. Thanks for the replys.

Hey Paul, Have you tried 26.0 gr. Varget with a 40 gr. NBT, seated as long as the you dare. I have to be on my toes or Robin-hood can out-shoot my 10FP with this load in his NEF. No BS

The only Nosler I have is the 45 gr solid base and it doesn't shoot too good. I tried 26.0 gr Varget, but I think I used a 50 gr V-max and it didn't shoot good. I use a 40 gr V-Max in my Hornet Handi and get less than 1" at 100 yards, but I haven't been able to do it with the .223 regardless of what I use.
