.36 BLUE RIDGE
« on: November 24, 2004, 01:57:21 PM »
I HAVE A .36 BLUE RIDGE FLINTER. USE 40GRS. OF GOEX 3F, A .350 RB WITH A .10 PRE LUBED PATCH. USING CABELAS MUZZLE LOADERS LUBE AND CABELAS SOLVENT, ALL NATURAL CITRUS.
I GET GOOD ACCURACY FOR THE FIRST 4-5 SHOTS THEN IT STARTS SHOOTING 10 TO 12 INCHES LOW.
I CAN FEEL THE FOULING BUILD UP BETWEEN SHOTS.
HAVE BEEN RUNNING LUBED PATCHES THROUGH THE BORE,(CABELAS MLL) BETWEEN SHOTS BUT CANT TELL ANY IMPROVEMENT.
THE CABELAS MLL SEEMS A BIT THICK, ITS A PASTE.
IF I RUN A PATCH WET WITH SOLVENT FOLLOWED BY A DRY PATCH IT CLEANS THE BORE AND IM BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
HAVE ABOUT 60 SHOTS THROUGH THE RIFLE BUT DONT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH MY .50 CAL RIFLES.
IS THE CABELAS LUBE INFERIOR? IS GOEX 3F REAL DIRTY IN SMALL BORE RIFLES?
AND YES, IM NEW TO FLINTLOCKS. (BOUGHT TWO IN A MONTH. BUILT ONE KIT AND BOUGHT THE BLUE RIDGE.)

Yes the Cabela's lube is inferior, like most mass marketed products. And yes, Goex can be dirty in small bores. You could use Swiss, at twice the price, to get more shots between cleanings, or you could research some better lubes, but you are still going to have to clean it after a while. Lots of options here too, spit, water, alcohol, moose milk, everyone has there favorites.

D.E.C.  Management of fouling is what BP shooting is all about.  First of all you may need to put more shots through your rifle to finish smoothing the bore.  Many times accuracy and fouling continues to improve through the first 200 shots in a new barrel.  A thicker patch might help with the break in.  In my H & A .36 underhammer, Swiss 2f  or Goex 3f with .35 Hornady ball wrapped in a .018 ticking patch cut at the muzzle works well enough.
Wonderlube 1000 works good for me.  I swab with a dry patch between shots, just down and back one time and I can shoot many times before cleaning  with hot soapy and greasing with Wonderl1000 before storing.
I shoot at Pidgeon CreekCA range near St Joe.  PM me and we could meet to compare notes.

i can only find .10 and .20 patches at cabelas which is a 1/2 mile from home. .20 patches are almost impossible to push through the bore.
plan on trying swiss 3f but dont want to buy 5lbs. which is the minimum  powder inc. will ship.
thought new barrel might be a factor.
thought i may try bore butter.
would lubing bore butter over pre lubed patches be a problem.

What are you using it for?If only on small game ,try a lighter load.Lymans lists loads in a 37inch barrel  with 25 grs at 1384 fps,30 grs at 1514fps,and 35 grs at 1644.The light load give less fouling and will still drop the tree rats.Farrerhaven.

I have a 36 cva and found 20gr of 3f with moose milk lets me shoot an reload ith no swaben.40 gr in that small bore will give you farther reach but not as good accuracy. If your gonna hunt small game 20gr is plenty with much less fouling.About any moose milk will work,my favorit is my skwerl juice.

10 parts of 70% ruben alkey
 1 part olive oil
 1 part pinsol
shake well, dampen the patch an shoot over and over :D
