The report says it was a "saiga sks"?

(censored word) media reports that this a__hole said he was shot at only they left out a couple little details in this report like he told authorities that he chased men who were running away and he didn't shoot at guys who chased him who "had rifles". In other words his self-defense motive is a crock of s_it as if we didn't know that already. Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up drinking.

I have been hunting central Minnesota since 1994 after I moved back from Oregon and have been shot at twice by Hmong/Vietnamese.  I used to hunt the Federal area called Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge until the late 1990's then switched to Sand Dunes State Forest.  For some reason I have never seen any Hmong in any of the State Forests, I assumed it was because they went to the Federal areas closer to the St. Paul and Minneapolis area.

I usually avoid the Hmong while hunting, I keep my distance as they have shot at me on 2 occasions, and it is well known that there has been some friction with other hunters and land owners.  We had 2 guys who were shot by the Hmong that I know of, one of the Hmong hunters said the fellow in the tree stand with the compound bow was a squirrel, and then left him to bleed after using a .22 on him.  The Hmong guy was later convicted.  I don't own any hunting land so I have the option of avoiding trouble.

If I owned any hunting land I would use patience and try to be polite, then call the police, if they were trespassing, and never turn my back on them while moving away.  It will be interesting to see how things are next year.  I am grateful that I don't have crowds to deal with where I go.

I am planning to move to Texas, I suppose things will be different in regards to the cultural aspect of the hunters there.

Well, it’s started!!  With the shooting/killing of those hunters in Wi. the talk about banning semi-auto "assault" rifles is on(next will be semi-auto shotguns and lastly semi-auto handguns).  Check this out;

My state already bans the "AK TYPE" semi auto rifles that are in 7.62x39.  "look a likes too in 7.62x39"   I guess we have a brewing problem with these people or did they provoke this guy and he snapped? Either way he shot unarmed people for no reason and there is no excuse for that.  This ends up to be a black eye for us too. This guy did the crime, he gets the time and we get the flack over it again the saga continues.                                                               BigBill

Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my gun ever will.

I live in Australia and because of an incident very similar to this in 1996 ALL semiauto rifles and shotguns have been banned for the general public. Pump action shotguns and rimfire semiautos are allowed for farmers but only those who are professional shooters(feral animal exterminators) can gain licences for centrefire semiautos.

In terms of the semisautos I can see the sense. I'm not sure why, however, anyone can own a pump action centerfire like a BPR or Rem 7600 but not a pump shotgun. I suppose the biggest question is why he was even hunting deer with an SKS. Surely the tags don't allow the wholesale slaughter of lots of animals and besides it's crazy to make each of the deer you shoot look like a collander. How many people actually use semiautos for deer shooting? Considering the relative inefficiency of the 7.62x39 round wouldn't a 30-30 lever gun be jst as good if not better?

My cousin hunts deer with an SKS.  They are dirt cheap and shots around here usually aren't that far away.  He's got 5 so far this season and all but one were taken with a single shot (with the other one requiring a second shot).  Why should he have to buy a more expensive lever gun when his $90 SKS is working out well.

And my father uses and my grandfather used a Remington 742 .30-06 for hunting.  It's semi-auto, and they never went out shooting up the woods.  I also know a good number of people who hunt with Browning BAR's as well.  Trust me, a LOT of people use semiauto rifles for hunting deer (at least around here).

Also, around here we are allowed to use dogs to hunt deer. That requires a shotgun with buckshot.  You'll see just as many semi-auto shotguns in the field here as you do pumps.  And when it comes to duck hunting a semi-auto shotgun is the most commonly used gun.

Kombi,

From what I've been able to determine on other SKS/AK boards, the 7.62x39 cartridge has ballistics very similar to a 30-30.   That factor combined with a very effective rifle (SKS or Saiga) and with inexpensive ammo makes for a great deal in a deer/hog rifle.  For example Survivor's SKS board has a forum dedicated to hunting with the SKS.  It appears from the posts on that forum alone that there is alot of folks who hunt with the SKS.  Same goes for the Saiga.  The Saiga even has a factory installed receiver scope rail.  CDNN has new Saigas in 7.62x39 for $179.  Good -VG condition Yugo SKSs can be had for as little as $85.  You can buy a case of 123gr. SP hunting ammo for less than $100 shipped.  I happen to own both and have hunted with them successfully. I hunt in S.Texas where the average shot is 75-125 yds.  Thus, either of these rifles is ideal for the application, IMHO.

Guys, there are a couple of very wrong 'things' here - first, you don''t defend yourself against unarmed people by chasing them down and shooting them in the back.  Second, you don't need 20 rounds in a semi-auto to hunt deer - a five round load is more than adequate, so the idea of his being there just to hunt deer is a bit wet.  Third, no matter what the anti-gunners hype about this, over-reaction and knee-jerk reaction is always the result.  Unfortunately, the over-reaction results in the type of ownership oppression that kombi1976 and our Canadian neighbors suffer.

Sure am glad those liberal knee-jerk idjits don't know how to make a full auto rifle out of a lever action.  Just a thought.  Mikey.

I called a couple of my friends I know that deer hunt with a SKS. Both have other rifles that they can and do use for deer hunting. So thought y'all would like to hear what they say.

Both said that they use it on stands that offer short 35 - 50 yard max shots. One also uses his SKS when running deer with dogs. Its legal with 125 grain soft points and a 5 shot clip, offers adequte killing power for smaller deer around here, is easy to carry, it don't mind the rain and offers a quick/reliable follow-up shot if needed.

I've never hunted with one but seems to me they make a lot of sense. Sure convinced me the SKS is an OK choice for their particular hunting needs. Those that are questioning and bashing the use of an SKS for deer hunting should not be so self-rightous. Remember Its NOT the gun - ITS THE CRIMINAL!

You are, of course, right but that still doesn't keep a shooting like this from bringing the Assault Weapons Ban back into the public light.  Last thing we need is another Assault Weapons Ban to come across the President’s desk as he has already stated he is in favor of it and would sign it.  The next one could be permanent.

And Chai Vang’s cry of ”self-defense” doesn’t hold water either.  Lawdog

Are we saying that we should not use semi-autos because that gives the anti's reason to ask for an "asault weapons ban"? If we don't use them doesn't that have the same affect as the ban? Let's face it, if that terrorist who claims to be a deer hunter had used a muzzle loader the outcry would be to ban muzzle loaders. We always want to ban the weapon as if it were responsible for what happened.
I am beginning to believe that the vietcong just changed addresses and are taking pot shots at Americans just like "the old days" in vietnam. If someone commits murder hang them in the public square as a warning to other would-be killers.  Well enough unwinding for me today.
