win '94 pistol sights?
« on: November 26, 2004, 10:38:09 AM »
Just bought a winchester model 94 ranger 30/30 and don't really like the sights. I started out with revolvers, then moved to scoped bolt rifles, and now thought I'd try a lever for a bit.  I'm used to nice big square iron sights, and all the curves and dishes in these sights are driving me crazy. It also seems as though it would be tough to hold a chip of front sight up to compensate for the range.        Does anyone know if I can put a set of iron sights like my ruger super redhawk has on my winchester?

Thanks,

Joe

I use Sourdough type front sights. They have been made by a number of different companies in the past, and I believe Marbles is making them again. Brownells carry them. they are a nice square blade, serrated on the rear face, and with an angled brass inset near the top of the rear faced to pick up light in low light environments. They are outstanding hunting sights, far and away better than the bead sights. You can file the factory rear sight to a flat top  with a square notch, or better yet, put a receiver peep sight on it. Lyman and Williams both make good receiver sights.  Most people have a noticeable increase in practical accuracy with receiver peep sights. Not quite as good as a scope, but much better than a barrel sight. If you go to a reciever sight, get a slot blank to fill in the slot in the barel were the rear sight was removed.

At one time Millet was making sights for lever actions, they looked just like their handgun sights.
