Hey guys ! How accurate is this huntsman muzzleloader? What loads are you guys using in this gun? Is there any blowback at all with this gun? Can I put a 12 ga. heavy barrel on this same action after removing the muzzleloader barrel? Thanx. John :-)

I'm new to the Huntsman also. Got my first one this year. Haven't made anything bleed with it yet, but I'll try again tomorrow. Not the gun's fault, just my novice deer hunting skills that leave a bit to be desired.

So far, I've used Pyrodex pellets (2-50gr) with 245gr SJHP bullets/sabots and Pyrodex P loose (70gr) with Hornady Great Plains 410gr flat nose conicals. At the range both are accurate and consistent. The sabots with 100gr seem to shoot flatter, but I'm leaning toward the loose powder and Great Plains conicals. I put two wonder wads under the bullet after the powder is loaded. Only took a few shots to zero the sights, I don't like scopes except on my .243 for coyotes and .22 for far-sighted squirrels.

Take a tip from one of my other posts' replies. Don't use bore butter with 209 primers and Pyrodex pellets. Makes a huge crud ring near the breech plug. The jag got stuck in the chamber when I tried to clean between shots.

As far as blow back I assume you mean smoke out the breech when firing. I get a little puff from the primer when shot, and a little whisp of smoke when pushing the jag in to clean between shots. Nothing bothersome. I like this thing as it is not a side hammer with all that hardware hanging out and it looks more traditional than the in-line types. I don't like the safety aspects of the in-lines when compared to being able to pull the hammer back on the Huntsman. I'm probably full of bull, but it makes me more comfortable. That's what it is all about.

My Huntsman is very accurate, shoots most everything under 2" at 100yds and a few under 1" with an average of about 1-1/4"to 1-1/2". I shoot everything from a 220gr saboted bullet to a 460gr conical. One of it's favorites is the 300gr SST sitting on 85gr of 777 FFG. Another favorite is a 460gr No Excuses Conical atop 65 to 75 gr of 777 FFG. The Knight PowerBelts that I believe are now discontinued also shot very well. Everything shoots well in mine. The SST's/Shockwaves load very hard however and the standard ramrod tip is not designed for loading pointed bullets. I use my range rod for loading and only use the supplied ramrod for reloading in the field.

There is blowback that channels itself out of the slot for the primer carrier, I don't care for this but it is far less than an open ignition. The primer carriers are very practical for hunting purposes though, just pop one in and your primed, break it open and pull out the carrier and your unprimed.

You CANNOT put a 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrel (if that is what you mean by 12ga heavy barrel) on the Huntsman frame due to it being a 10ga blank bored to 12ga rifled. This barrel can only go on a 10ga SB-2 frame. You can however put the 20ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrel (very accurate) which is a 12ga blank bored to 20ga rifled on the Huntsman frame and the 20ga has a 1-28" twist rifling vs the 12ga 1-35" I believe. You can also put any other shotgun barrel from .410 to 12ga on the Huntsman frame.

I have my 20ga Ultra Slug Hunter barrel mounted on my Huntsman frame right now. See pic below.

(Ms. tagrabber) I have seen it kill three deer this year. 80 grains of Pyrodex RS loose with a 250 grain XTP Hornady Sabot. Three shots, three kills. First year going out. Shot two deer myself, killed. And the ol' man shot the third, killed also. Would not carry anything else besides a Huntsman. :-D

I hunted with a Huntsman for the first time this year and got a spike at about 45 yards. I use 80 grains of Black Mag3 and a 240 grain T/C Mag Sabot. When I first sighted it in this year this gun surprised me. Has to be one of the most accurate muzzle loaders I have shot. It will put 5 shots all touching at 50 yards. I use a Simmons 2X7 scope. And it does have blowback, need to clean the receiver face and inside the receiver but it doesn't get all over your scope. I am really pleased with the Huntsman.

Will the Huntsman receiver take any centerfire rifle barrels at all? Reason I'm asking, I had in mind sending one of my SB-2's back for a M/L barrel but just the other day I saw a brand new lonely looking Huntsman in blue steel at a local gun shop for what seemed like a fair price of just a nickel shy of $150. Didn't sound too bad, but would be even better if it would take the slug barrel like you said and maybe a .22 Hornet, .223, or a .30-30 barrel. Thanks in advance, .308...

Sorry .308, you can only put shotgun barrels on a Huntsman SB-1 frame.

There is however a blued Huntsman .50 cal/.243 Combo that is on a SB-2 Center Fire Rifle Frame that would be able to have other Center Fire rifle barrels fitted.

Go to www.hr1871.com and look under Huntsman Combo's. The other Huntsman Combo's that are .50 cal/12ga are on a SB-1 frame and cannot have center fire rifle barrels installed due to much higher pressures than the SB-1 frame is designed for.

The SB-2 Center Fire Rifle frame and the SB-2 10ga/12ga Ultra Slug frame are not the same frame. I know it is confusing, but that is the way it is. The SB-2 10ga frame cannot have Center Fire Rifle barrels fitted to it either.

Yep it does answer my question, thank you Sir. I overlooked the Huntsman Combo link when I was trying to figger it out for myself. I'll most likely send my later model SB-2 frame back for the M/L barrel and get a .308 barrel I've been wanting too. I'll pass on that lonely Huntsman I saw, rather have a frame that will take centerfires too.
