New Barrel in 260 Rem for Encore
« on: November 27, 2004, 01:53:38 PM »
:D   Picked up today at the gunshow ( one not outlawed yet) a 15in blue Encore Barrel in 260 Rem.  I have heard good things about this round in Encores so I jumped on this one to find out what all the excitment is all about.  Anyone care to share any loads or hints ?  I'll have to see if Santa will bring dies, brass, scope, ect if I''m really good to her !

Congrats Iowahunter!

The .260 is a great round. I have a 15" one by Bullberry. Limited loading experience thus far due to running out of time for Hunting season. So far have used 100 gr. sierral hp for initial break / sight in loads using 32 and 35 gr H4895 (light loads). Did manage to get a couple of groups @ 1".

Also threw together some loads of 120 gr speer hot core with 36.5 gr rl15, pretty accurate. Also 120 BT with 36.5 gr RL15, again groups hovering around 1.0~1.25". Not bad for initial loads and getting used to first time shooting handgun @ 100 yds.

Caution: recoil is not bad. Muzzle blast is horrendous. First time i ever had to wear both plugs and muffs. " Fire in the Hole" shuts down and paralyzes the the range members, definately do not make friends.

This is common to any short bbl. cartdride of this class.

Enjoy.

Mirage.

 Thanks for the reply.  I know it will be a bit on the loud side as I have either owned or shot friends guns that are in this range.   I ordered some cases and dies from Midsouth that should be here this week but, Deer season opens this weekend so I'll be out with my 45-70 Encore looking for a nice buck.   Good Luck to you on your Hunt !

I have used Varget to date with 120 grain NBT's (2 whitetail (1-buck & 1-doe) and two elk (1-bull & 1-cow).  Likely will try 140 grain A-Max's next.  Primarily a deer cartridge for me, as both elk were under 100 yards.
FWIW Both elk went down under 20 feet and same with the deer with exit wounds on all four.
Plan to try H-4350 next for better performance (velocity & lower ES).
Getting great accuracy now (under .5 @ 100 yds) but am looking to see if I can stay above supersonic @ 1k with it.
Enjoy your new barrel (mine is a 14 incher in a MOA Maximum).
