RCBS Pro Melt Furnace vs Lee Pro 4
« on: November 27, 2004, 03:21:06 PM »
My 10# Lee Pot would not go above 700 degrees today.  I could not get my bullets to fill out.  I want a new pot and I am getting a 20 pounder.  Is there any advantage to that expensive RCBS over the Lee?  Thanks.

My brother had the same problem with his, kept it for fishing sinkers and bought a RCBS in 83 and it's still going strong. Once you calibrate the thermostat with a thermometer it keeps it pretty much spot on. Get's a bit warmer as the pot is near the bottom but that's not much of a problem.

Lee vs RCBS

Originally the RCBS furnace was developed for them by a company named Ohio Thermal.  I have one of those.  I've used it almost constantly since I bought it.  Still works perfectly.

I also had a Lee, several Lee's.  They have all LONG SINCE worn out.

I like the RCBS so well I've bought one for each alloy.  One for wheelweights, another for lead and a third for linotype.  Never had a single problem with any of them.

Also the RCBS warrenty is for a lifetime.

I wrapped a piece of foil back fiberglass insulation around my Lee and held it on with bailing wire.  It got hotter.

I've been using a Lee 20 lb. for the past 7 years.  These days, about 95% of my casting is for blackpowder rifle competition.

I've cast about 7000 bullets out of it, in lots of 50-60 bullets at a time, which equates to about 125 separate casting sessions.  It does leak a bit from the bottom spout (I cast with a dipper), but other than that, it's been working fine.

However - if it ever breaks down, I'll replace it with the RCBS.  At the time I bought it, though, the price difference ($50 vs $200, as I recall) was very important to me.

My RCBS pot is going on ten years reliable service.  I can't complain a bit.
