Shorten and recrown barrel
« on: November 28, 2004, 07:56:39 AM »
I have a model 70 stainless in 30.06 with a stock 24" barrel.  I would like to shorten and recrown the barrel to 22".  Nothing wrong with the barrel I just prefer a shorter weapon.  I am asking for trouble?

Not at all.  That is a very usual length for a 30-06 and pretty handy in the woods.  I've never particularly liked short barrels but have no problem with them.  With rounds that are more over bore I prefer the longer barrels to get the most from the extra powder but the 30-06 is fairly balanced and so should do nicely..
