Single Six w/Blackhawk Grip Frame?
« on: November 28, 2004, 08:50:03 AM »
Need a .22 pistol. Thinkin about a new single six blued 4 5/8" barrel. Have plans to change sights to v-notch and front ivory bead. Replace factory aluminum ejector rod housing with steel one and cresent head ejector rod. Wolfe spring kit. And free spin pawl. All from Brownells. My question is: is a blackhawk grip frame from Numrich Gun Parts steel? And could I install one on the single six to replace factory alloy gripframe? If not do I have any other choices for steel grip frame? Is this single six accurate enough to pot small game even with the short sight radius? If not I would consider a stainless MKII w/6 7/8" or 10" barrel. But I prefer revolvers. The 4 5/8" is just the only length I care for in the single six. Had a 6.5" single six once and loved it except for barrel length and the fact it had only fixed cowboy sights.

I would realy like your feed back guys. Thanks a lot.

Sorry, no input on the grip frame but I will offer this. Any of my  single six's are capable of consistantly  taking small game out to 50-60' or so. ( 30' for headshots) with iron sights.  Admittedly though, my shortest SS is 5.5".
FWIW, I'd offer two other thoughts.
1) With all those mods, your talking about dumping some significant $ into a Ruger SS if I'm not mistaking. I would offer that for around the same $ you could get into a nice S&W mod 17/617 in 4" or 6" barrel and have (slightly to significantly)better accuracy and an all steel DA revolver.
2) a Ruger  MK II target pistol ( 5.5 or 6 7/8")will be about 1/2 again as accurate ( in my experience) as the single six and has a much  MUCH better sight radious.  OF course, if you didn't like the 6.5" barrel on your old single six, I'm not sure you'd feel any different about a long barreled MK II.

Thanks for your replies guys. I went ahead and got that 4 5/8'' model... and love it! It's realy accurate( I only have had the chance to cap off 50 rounds at 15 yards plinkin though). This thing had an amazing amount of  flash from the cylinder face and muzzle at about a half hour before dark(cci blazers)- way cool!! I am only gona make those sight mods and replace the ejector rod housing and gripframe with steel ones from brownells(I'm askin for this stuff for Christmas). I gave it a home trigger/hammer job by polishing the hammer and trigger assemblies with a jewalry polishing cloth and cut a couple coils off the main spring- very smooth now. I'm gona have a blast with this mostly plinkin and blastin jack rabbits and any other vermin that crosses my path. Duane do you got them nasty nutrias down there in Louisiana like we do in Oregon? Them things are realy fun to shoot.

Catblaster
I rec'd a 10 inch NM Single 6 in a trade a few years back. I swapped the grip frame from a Super BH(dragoon style squared rear)..What a difference..Lots of interest when I take it to a match, but I  have never seen another one..oh well I LIKE mine hahaha :D
