I'm using Red Dot as a powder. Anyone have a good receipe for RD and 7/8 oz shot? Looking for something that is very mild. Have my wife and a pard's wife that need to shoot this and they need low recoil loads.

One shouldn't assume anything, but I'm guessing you are talking 12 ga., since Alliant doesn't list any 20 ga data for Red Dot. If that is the case, check out Alliant's recipes:

Enter the Guide

Click on "2 3/4-in Win Plastic AA Shells, 7/8 oz"

At the bottom of that page click on:
Prim - Win 209 Wads - Win 12L gray Powder - Red Dot

That will give you three recipes.

I use the lightest charge shown, and the Claybuster equivalent 7/8 oz wad, and get loads that are easy on the shoulder and are sufficiently powerful for any knockdowns I've encountered. It's also sufficient for the occasional thrown clay bird you might have to contend with.

Ya might wanna try these depending on what components you have on hand. All are for the Winchester AA Compression Formed hull.

Win. 209 primer, 16.5 grains RD, One Win. WAA12SL wad with one 20 ga. BP .125" card under shot. 1181 fps at 7200 psi.

Win. 209 primer, 17.0 grains RD, One Rem. TGT-12 was, one 20 ga. BP .125" card under shot. 1196 fps at 7000 psi.

Win. 209A primer, 17.0 grains of RD, one Fed. 12SO was and one 20 ga. BP .125" card under shot. 1197 at 7900 psi.

Trouble with using RD with 7/8 oz. loads is most require the .125" card to take up space.

You might want to look at using 18.0 Clays with W209 primer and one Win. WAA12SL wad for 1245 fps and 8000 psi.

I'm loading 15gr Clays in AA shells with 1oz of shot. I just picked up some MEC bushings to try 14, 13 and 12gr. Clays and RD are similar in loading data, and it's probably pretty close to equivalent. Main thing in CAS is the ability to knock down falling targets (pepper poppers), and also the occasional bird triggrred by the falling popper. Light as you can get will do, as you aren't trap shooting or hunting. Just make sure you mark the box with the load. I used to load real light for a lady friend, and used Peters Blue Magic shells for identification, and used AA for the regular loads.

Since all our shotgunning is CAS I won't have to worry about keeping them seperate from regular loads. Rotator cluff surgery years ago took high power long guns off the table for me. CAS means I have to find a light load for both the Mrs. and me.

Here are some pretty light loads (cowboy type) for a 12 ga;

15.5 gr CLAYS, WA12 Shotshell, WAS12SL Wad, WIN 209, 7/8 oz
16.5 gr RED DOT, , WA12 Shotshell, WAS12SL Wad, WIN 209, 7/8 oz

These ought to be fairly light - Poof Poof :-)
