Author Topic: I finally got a Mod. 38/96 Swede. (Read 431 times)

I had been looking for a mod 38 since I acquired a mod. 96 last summer and started reading about the Swedes. This week end I made a gun show in Springdale AR and lo and behold there it was. Turned down bolt, CG 1916 receiver with all visable #s matching except the floor plate. I had looked in every pawn shop and gun store I could find and this was the first one I had seen in six months of looking. The dealer had just traded for it and didn't know anything about it. The tag said $165 so I mentioned to my brother (loud enough for the guy behind the table to hear me) that the floor plate doesn't match, the stock looks like it has been refinished and the blueing is awful dark to be original. I asked the bottom dollar and he said $150. It was hard to contain my excitement but I managed to pay him with out jumping for joy. The brass disk was stamped a #1. when I got home I took off the stock and it has matching #s too. Aw well, even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while.

Thats an awesome find and great price too!!! The M38 barreled actions at Samco aren't that cheap too. You did good buddy. But be aware you can't stop at just two swede's!! I just can't pass up a swede that looks awesome for a cheap price too for some reason they follow me home too.

yes, i myself am a recent convert to the 6.5 Swede. now that you have a M38 and M96 you just need to get a AG42B Ljungmann and you will have all 3 Swedish 6.5 service rifles. but it won't stop there. no, you'll want to find even better examples and the cheaper sporters will seem irresistable, and then there's the 6.5X55 Norwegian Krag. and you will also find it neccessary to collect all the tools and accessories that go with them. then you'll say "maybe i should get a German K-98, for the sake of comparision" and after that a Yugo M-48, then you'll get a hankering for a M59/66 SKS. you know what that makes you, don't you? an addict. oh, what have you gotten yourself into?

kevin.303 is right once you get into this its a never ending story!!!!!! Its just like eating potato chips you just can't have one!!!! I find it very hard to resist another good looking military surplus rifle!!!! But the new ones got me lately too. Heck i like them all but i lean towards the cosmoline smelling ones!! Its all about; "I can own, touch and shoot a piece of history" thats what its all about. This is one sport anyone can do on any budget since there is still a lot of under $100 great buys out there right now too. Don't pass up those cheap russian 91/30's either because there good shooters too.

I was in a shop yesterday looking at a 1909 Carl Gustave with a #3 disc but the dealer wanted $300 for it. He has some nicer ones but for even more. I think I was fortunate to find my M38 for $150 when I did. Mikey.

And BigBill, you're right again, this is a never ending story (lol).

I know what you guys are saying, - I am thinking a 41B or something with receiver sights would fit nicely in the collection. I know I have the bug because I'm thinking of buying another 6.5 and haven't even shot the M38 yet. Maybe a Finnish 6.5... I'll keep looking. These 6.5 Swedes are like turkey hunting, - you hate to tell someone how good it is due to the increase in competetion. When I started turkey hunting here in AR, 30 years ago there were very few turkeys and turkey hunters. I had mixed emotions about promoting turkey hunting as it would increase the hunters and I didn't know if the #s of turkeys would increase also. As it turned out the turkey population exploded and there were plenty to hunt. I don't think the #s of Swedish rifles will increase but between you and me, " they're the best kept secret yet.

I 'had' an M38 several years ago. Mine was a Husky, manufactured in 1941...all matching. I gave $90 for it. 'Out of the box', it grouped Hansen 139gr ball into 1.5" @ 100 yards.

savageT/Jim; Right now I wouldn't be too fussy about the #1, #2 or #3 I would look at the bore condition first and wether its all matching numbers steel and wood. With samco only having a few swede's left to sell there going to be scarce in a few years but will still have a few popping up at gun shows. Right now there are some real dogs for sale on the net the pics really tell about the rough life they had. Its the ones I can see and touch in person that has me wanting more swede's. I wish I had a room full like some guys have for their sitting on a gold mine in a few years. Its funny I have a few swede's now but i'm still shooting only one of them a 1907 CG M96. Don't forget the #1, #2 or #3 means the amount of rust in the bore but i never see any no matter what number it is? I wouldn't be afraid of a number #3 either if she looks good. I think the swede's took very good care of all their rifles and its hard to get a bad swede unless the barrel is shotout but i never seen one yet but i'm sure there out there too. We can always get a barrel from samco if we have to. I may not go for too many rifles lately but there's always room for a good looking swede!!! BigBill

bills right, my AG42 is stamped with a #3 but it shines like new polished steel. of course i'm fanatical about keeping it clean and it's previous owner is my gunsmith, who is even more nuts about keeping guns in clean and good working condition.
