Contender 223 ?
« on: November 28, 2004, 04:17:20 PM »
I am looking for a used SS 14 in 223 barrel. I have never shot a 223. My question is for those who have and specifically in a handgun. Should I look for one with a muzzle tamer or is the recoil so minimal it doesn't matter? Thanks.

Forget the muzzle tamer.  The recoil is minimal and the muzzle tamer will just add a bunch of noise for nothing.  This is one of those calibers that never made sense to me why they even offered a muzzle tamer.

The reason for a muzzle brake on a .223 rilfe is to allow the shooter to see the bullet impact.  This can be extremely valuable for a varmint hunter shooting alone so he can correct for misses at extreme range - I know it works well on a .22-250.  On a Contender a brake is of dubious value, but many shooters just like the looks of a brake.  Marketing is about meeting the consumers' perceived needs, not their real needs.

That sounds more like sales to me.  Marketing shapes those perceptions, real or not.

I agree with lonestar on the rifle porting, I had my Remington 700v in 220 Swift mag-na-ported just for that reason. They even had a specific "3" port that they did. It's a standard 2 port on the sides with another centered on top of  the barrel.

Another thing to consider is that you will lose 1 1/4" in usable barrel length with the MT. A Super '14' becomes a Super 12 3/4" which in a .223 is alot. For my money I would pass on it if you can find one without.

I made the mistake of shooting one off the bench with a sandbag rest.... a covered bench as in a tin roof.  I sure am glad I had ear protection on.  The pressure wave from the muzzleblast blew my hat off.  I don't want any part of muzzle breaks if I can help it.
