Casting 50 cal bullets
« on: November 29, 2004, 08:54:08 AM »
:D I have 3 50 caliber muzzleloaders. I was thinking about casting my own bullets. I use hornaday great plains bullets in one rifle and they shoot fine. I shoot round balls in the other and the third rifle ain't decided yet.
What's a good shooting bullet that I could cast myself? :D

Lyman has a mold for what they call a Great Plains bullet that should be good.  they also have molds for the TC style Maxi Ball.  Maxi shoots good but I think the lyman GP bullet would be better for hunting.

Can't go wrong with a Lee mold for your round balls.

Lee REAL conicals shoot very well in some rifles.  They shoot very well in my rifles with a 1:48' twist.  They come in both 250 & 320 grn weights and you can get a double cavity mold for less than $20.  You can even get a combo mold that will cast a 320 grn REAL and a .490 ball at the same time.
Do it outdoors!!

I've shot and played with the Lyman maxi ball in my .50's for several years now and the one I have now it will make the holes touch at 50 yards with 100grains of black powder. Close enough for the girl I go with.

All of the bullets mentioned are easy to cast. The maxi shoots well out of mine so thats what I use only in 45 cal. Maybe some one here that has a 50 cal real mold will send you a few to try out  Or go with the great plains style since it works well
