Baikal IZH 94?
« on: November 29, 2004, 09:48:03 AM »
Been seeing these on-line and wondering what they really look like.  Finally got to hold one this past weekend.  Seemed well built and solid.  Now I'm wondering what it shoots like.  Anyone have any insight?  I'd like to have one in 6.5x55 with 12 gauge.

I have one in 30-06 and 12 ga.  It shots very well as a field gun.

With the 30-06 I am able to shot a 1.5 inch group with he first 2 shots.  The barrel heats up after the second shot and typically goes high left by an inch or so.  The 12 ga shoots 2 inch groups at 50 yrds using a rifled choke.

This is my gun of choice for deer hunting here in Texas.  I have found having the 12 ga with no. 4 buck shot and the 30-06 a great combination to have when stalking deer.  The Baikal holds up well when walking through cedar.  And I don care if this gun gets dinged up.

Thanks, dougk, for the reply.  I've been wanting to know how these guns hold up.  I talked to one gun store owner in Houston that said they are great working guns- not so pretty but do their jobs well.  I hunt in Edwards County and during deer season you never know what will walk by.  I shot a turkey last weekend with my .308 and there wasn't much left of the bird.  Having a choice of shotgun and rifle would be ideal on my lease.

Sorry, I forgot......  Do you have yours scoped? If so, what kind of base and scope are you using?

I use a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x scope with the dove tail rings.  EAA will provide you with the specifics.  The gun is solid and has never let me down in the field.

Last weekend I was fortunate to take 2 deer with the 30-06.  The first was a 120 yd shot from a sitting position.  The second was a 110 yd shot while standing.   Reloading was easy.  Both shots where on 2.5x and took place within 30-60 seconds of each other.
