T/C .vs. bolt
« on: November 29, 2004, 01:36:47 PM »
Looking at a T/C and have a few questions... I have done a little bit of shooting/loading with a bolt gun in 308.  I'm used to using a MTM cradle, and a Sinclare bore guide with solvent port for cleaning.  How does cleaning work for a T/C  With the action open, it doesn't seem like it would set in the cradle too well.  Also, is there a bore guide/solvent port available for a T/C?  If not, what is the easiest way to clean the gun without damaging the chamber.  Also, what type of accuracy can be expected?  I've got loads for my 308 (although too long for the magazine) that shoot less than 1/2" at 100 yards.  Is this possible with a stock T/C?  If not, what is needed to get these types of groups out of a T/C?

I take the barrels off my frame to clean them. I don't have any rifle barrels all 14 inch pistol size except for on 12 inch. T/C sells a brass guide that fits on their cleaning rod set, that is what I use. I get accuracy as good as any bolt action hunting rifle from my handguns and better than most lever or semi-autos. I don’t feel under gunned on the range with my Contenders.

Sinclair makes nylon bore guides for both Thompsons & bolt guns, they are pretty much caliber specific. Very good people to deal with.

I've a wall full of Dewey's that I rarely use anymore.

Most of the time I'm using the Otis pull through.

Cleaning Encore Rifles

To clean my rifles (encores) I open the action, lay it on its side on a couple of sandbags on the bench.  I use the Dewey rod and run it through the chamber out to the muzzle.  Then I screw in the tip with a soaked cleaning patch and pull it through to thoroughly wet the barrel and a little gets into the chamber.  I use a moist patch to clean the chamber.

I always pull the dry patches through from the muzzle too.  I might have to try the Otis pull through.

My method keeps the solvents from dripping down into the action.
