Opinion on my next barrel
« on: November 29, 2004, 02:06:37 PM »
Well I have now have an extra scope so I have a reason to buy another barrel.  I currently have a 14' 7-30 and want something a little smaller.  I will be shooting primarily paper but maybe a chance at a critter now and then.  I was leaning toward the .223 but the new .204 seems pretty interesting.  I started reloading in April with my G2 purchase so I am fairly new to both.  What is the availability of reloading components for the .204?

Hey Bob,

The 223 barrel is an excellent choice for a reloader.  They are very accurate in the TC.

I would also, consider the 22 Long Rifle.  I bought one this year from Ed's TCs and it was a 16" bull barrel from the Custom Shop.  In a hangun configuration it will out shoot both of my 22 LR rifles.  It is cheap to shoot and no reloading.

I have a 223 barrel that I wouldn't trade off for anything, but that 22 LR will never go either.

Difficult choices.

I agree with Harold. My first Contender was a 223 & it's still my favorite. It's an easy cartridge to reload & components are reasonably priced. You just gotta have a 22 also. Then you will get tired of changing barrels & buy another frame & on & on :)  :)  :)  :)

The 223 works great in my 14" tube.It was the first barrel I bought and it is still a shooter.I have a 22 hornet that is a little more picky about what you feed it and factory ammo is HIGH  priced if you don't reload.

I would recomand the .223 unless you want to form your own brass for the .204. The only way to get .204 brass right now is buy new ammo or form your own from .222 mag. brass. Other than that you can get componants for the .204.

I read a post from GB that he had two factory .223 barrels, the first didn't shoot well and he returned to TC for a new one.  If I recall, that one shot a little better but he still wasn't happy and got rid of it as well.  Is this typical for a 14" factory .223 barrel or was GB just unlucky?

I see on Ed's site that he has a used .223 barrel for $145.  It has been on his site for a while, is there something I should know about buying used barrels?  Do you recommend spending the additional $40 for a new?

Ed does not update his website very often (17 months since last update).

But is a great guy to buy from.  Just call him and he will send you a current list of what he has.  I have bought my last 4 barrels from him.

Thanks for the advise,  I did send Ed an email for current listing.  Right now I am still leaning toward the .223 but the .22lr sounds interesting, I'll just add that to the long wish list.
