lost a nice one today

yesterday was the first day of ohios gun season (shotgun with slugs) for the first time in the 5 years i have hunted this place i had trespassers everywhere. most years its just  one or two this year i was 7 that i caught and a few more that i didn't . because of this i didn't see a single deer at  my proven spot ,every year in the past 5 i deer has been either killed or missed deer by 9 am at this spot . well i got mad and at 9:30 i left and gave every trespasser i could find a very stern first and last warning. so i went home got there about 10:15 dropped off the ultra slug hunter and grabbed the mossburge 500  the place i was going to i would more then likely have a running shot . so i went out there and still saw nothing until i was about to leave then i saw a nice doe but she was running way to fast (i heard someone empty their shotgun at her just seconds before) and she was in some thick brush so i oped no to shoot . so i left and was heading home but i decided at the last minute to go to a treestand that i had left my watch at about 3 weeks ago. well on my way there i was going though some honeysuckle and right in front of me a nice buck jumped up and ran about 80 yards and stoped turned broad side and looked back at me so i fire and at the shot he dropped at the shot and rolled down the hill then got up so i shot again ,i think i missed that one. i went to the place i shot him at and saw blood every where with as much blood as i saw (dark red blood (liver i'm thinking???) you would think he would of ran out in 10 or less yards but when i got to 350 i had crossed the property line and decided to go ask the owner if i could get my deer. so i took my vest off and hunt it on aa tree next to my last spot of blood .  so i went to his house yelled from his gate  but he had a radio on and hear me so i went home and get his number and call him. but on the way there i jumped a doe  at 40 yards (oh BTW this is the demon doe from hell) she jumped up and just looked at me so i loaded my gun (my gun was empty cause i thought i was done)took amie and shot she ran 10 steps and looked back so i shot again she ran another 10 steps and looked back at me so i shot the last one i had in the gun (3 shell rule in ohio) then she jumped in to the corn well i walk over and see blood every where  i waited 15 min the started tracking . the blood was so thick i was walking really fast down a row of corn and i could see blood 20 steps ahead of me the whole time. well i walk for a while and then come to a small opening in the corn and there she is about 10 feet from me BUT STILL ALIVE so i shoot my last bullet from the hip and hit  her  she runs down the row about 30 yards and then just looks back at me  ans stands there for about 10 minutes or so , it was long enough that i sat down on the ground to watch her . so i go home to get more ammo come back and find her dead. but here is the surprise every one of my shots hit she had 4 bullet holes in her.lol. so i take her in and drop her off at the house and and get the guys number for my buck i call him and guess what he says no . no matter what i say he says no .  the reason i'm up right now is because i need to go back and get my vest that i had around the tree and i got up at 3:00 am  to do it so i wouldn't get caught by him well i looked all around and i just couldn't find it so either i just didn't see it or he went and got it . i told him where i was and that my vest was there when we talked on the phone  but i don't know for sure to i wont blame him. but hey at least i got a doe yesterday and i got a buck durning bow  and a few in kentucky (oh btw that 7mm-08 handi i got off of BBF works great on deer) i'm still a happy camper our freezer is full and were starting to give some of it away it sure does fill good to share the wealth a bit.

all in all it was a very interesting day lots of highs lots of lows but i think i had more highs then lows.

Nice going there mitchell. Got some meat in the freezer in spite of it all. I got a feeling that another freezer got some meat in it too, thanks to you. Sounds like your buck got harvested alright, just not by you. I lost a nice 8-point in a big slough.....I think. My bud and I both shot at him at about 8 a.m on opening day.....not sure which one of us hit him but he was definitely hit. Trailed him for a good 50 yards to the water and he pulled the disappearing act. We hunted the entire area for 3 1/2 hours but no buck. It happens, figure he got lost to the HUGE slough.

What kind of slug are you shooting?    You know how it is with some of those deer......they can sometimes carry a surprising amount of lead.   I hope you have better luck yet this week.

well it was a mix of a few different ones i had 3 brenneke's and 3 remington slugers high volcity . the buck had to brennekes shot at him and the doe had all the rest.

I've seen on one of the 'training films', possibly by Bill Jordan, where a doe was knocked over by a slug -- but probably because it was hit in the back bone or the shoulder.    The 12 ga' slugs are a good diameter, as we all know, being about .70 caliber to start with.    But they don't stop the deer all that well.    

I have a couple of cousins who can shoot with the best of them -- quickly and accurately.    One of them put three Brenneke's into a buck some years ago in short order and he kept on moving for a little bit.    They got him out of the woods, but it was surprising that he could even stand after the way the first one hit him.     But those all-lead slugs do that often.     The same cousin drilled a doe with one or two slugs out of a very expensive Browning Gold, and she went a Long Way before dying.    She went Hundreds of yards before they found her!

I think that unless we use a compromise, jacketed-type of projectile out of a slug-shooter that we are handicapped in the state of Ohio.
