My Encore Finally Got here
« on: November 30, 2004, 03:17:41 AM »
Well my encore came in last night at Wally World. I am very impressed with the rifle. I can definitely see that this barrel with probably need a muzzle brake. Can anyone recommend any for me? It is a 300 mag in a heavy barrel in stainless.
I really dont like the looks of the factory synthetic stocks and will be replacing them with a laminated stock set.
Has anyone had any experience with the laminated stock sets that EABCO has for 100.00? Do you have to do anything to the Boyds stocks?

I would suggest you shoot the 300MAG before you decide to put a muzzle brake on it. I have one in the SS heavy barrel also and find it not bad at all in the recoil department. I would suggest either the Walnut stock from T/C or the laminated stocks from Boyds stocks. He has them finished and ready to install. With the synthetic stock you will feel the recoil a lot more that with the wooden or laminated ones. Save you money on the muzzle break and get a quality stock instead. JMHO. :D

I would agree with redhawk1, stay away from a muzzel break if you can. and go with wood stocks and a limb saver recoil pad before going into muzzel breaks., they arevery hard on the ears even under hunting conditions.
be safe and god bless

Stick with the synthetic stock and add a Sims recoil pad.  It is phenomenal how much recoil they absorb.  Sims makes one to fit the encore stock perfectly.  I purchased one for my 300 RUM and was amazed at the reduced felt recoil.  I immediately ordered one for my Encore 209X50.  It works great shooting 150grs of 777 and 300gr bullets.   You won't need the muzzle brake.  They are that good!  Besides, you don't want the extra noise the muzzle break creates.

Muzzle brakes very very bad!  One unprotected shot from a Browning .300 WM w/BOSS has left me with a high frequency hearing loss and tinnitus in my left ear.  Nerve damage will not repair itself.  Either get a smaller caliber or a good recoil pad and suck it up.  Just my opinion though.  I do wish I would have never pulled the trigger on that doe back in 1997 though!

As an alternative for stocks, if you are handy with finishing wood, you can get semi-finished stocks from www.gunstocksinc.com.  They will cut to your LOP and install pads.  They have laminates in a variety of colors, thumbhole stocks, and several options for forestocks.
