digital callers?
« on: November 30, 2004, 03:43:45 AM »
I am thinking about buying a digital caller and need some advice on what to get and what to stay away from. I will be calling coyotes, fox, bobcat, and
crows in western North Carolina and north eastern Georgia. I have looked at the Johnny Stewart PreyMaster, PreyMaster Pro, and Bushwacker callers. I have looked at the foxPro caller but really don't want to spend that much on a caller. Not being a real serious predator hunter is there that big a need to have a wireless caller? I want to get the best caller for my money.

I have a Fox-Pro 16 sound model with remote($425 shipped). I know they cost a little more, but I can assure you, they're worth every penny and then some. This is my second Fox-Pro. My first was 8 sounds, and no remote. I wish I'd known you were looking for a caller, because I just sold my old one(still works great) to a guy for $150.

I've tried about a dozen or so electronic callers through the years, and the Fox-Pro is the very best in my opinion. If you bought one, you wouldn't be sorry.

Has anyone used these or seen them used before? Any knowledge about quality?
It's in the Cabelas catalog for 19.95.  external speaker for 17.95

I actually just saw those for the first time a couple days ago in a local shop. They don't have much volume, but some of the prey sounds actually are very good.

For $20 they're worth a try I guess.

I was directed to another forum and one guy there took a dremmel to the remote speaker grill and opend it up between the grills and he and many others said it increased the volume about 3 fold.

He said his wife and daughter could hear it 250yds out after the improvement.

I'd say if you did that, and it made it that much louder, they'd be a good caller for the money.

I bought the Johnny Stewart Prey Master two months ago. It came with two deer cartridges and a 25' extension cord for the speaker. It's powered by 4 AA batteries and I've got a total of 10 hours of use out of those batteries and it still plays fine and loud. I don't ususally play mine too loud for crows. They can be very arrogant towards their own and silence sometimes from a crow who just called can get them more pissed off than anything. I play a little mind game with crows and see if I can peak their curiosity enough to approach. Using the same call over and over will get them wise. Anyway yes, the Prey Master is a good investment for the money and the only thing that would make it better is for it to be wireless.

It's been awhile but the Johnny Stewart fighting crows tape worked well for me.  Your right, crows are one smart bird, and hard to call a second time.
